If global warming doesn't make you ponder our children's future, ATMOSPHERIC OXYGEN DEPLETION should. And it is already happening.

When the Earth was formed 4.6 billion years ago, there was no oxygen in the atmosphere. The oxygen in the atmosphere today was emitted by plants - phytoplankton and sea weeds in the ocean, and trees, shrubs and grass on land, through the eons. Plants, through photosynthesis, absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and emit oxygen (O2), so the animals can live. Eliminate the plants in the ocean and on land, and the animals, both marine and terrestrial, will suffocate.

Next, any kind of burning consumes oxygen from the atmosphere and emits CO2 into the atmosphere. In fact, every 1 unit of CO2 increase is accompanied by 2-4 units of O2 decrease.

We don't need an Einstein to figure out that if we keep on burning fossil fuels, and cut/burn down forests, and acidify the ocean impacting on the phytoplankton, not only do we cause global warming, we deplete oxygen from the atmosphere, as well as the sources (plants) that can regenerate it. The result is the steady decline in the atmospheric oxygen concentration in the last 20 years when O2 concentration was globally monitored.

The pre-industrial oxygen concentration in the atmosphere was about 21%. Today, some places register as low as 16%. Reportedly, some enclaves of high human population and concentration, especially in large and technologized cities, have scored as low as 7% (?), e.g. parts of Tokyo and some cities in India. According to OSHA rules on atmospheres in closed environments, "if the oxygen level falls below 19.5% it is oxygen deficient, putting occupants of the confined space at risk of losing consciousness and death."

Symptoms of sea-level oxygen deprivation is similar to those of altitude sickness - include shortness of breath, headache and nausea.

Of course the current generations won't suffocate immediately, but continue with our present oil/coal-burning trajectory and our children's children and the animals will have a hard time just to catch a breath.

Chinese Activists rescue 1500 dogs - with help from police!

which depicts Chinese activists rescuing a truck load of 1500 dogs meant for the meat market in China. More encouraging still is that the police assisted them in the rescue. Following is my comment on this blog.

I’m a Chinese Canadian ARA and a vegan, and am as appalled as anyone else, and ashamed. Were I in China, I would be among those doing the rescue, especially since it happened in Guang Dong, the province of my birth, the worst province indulging in this atrocity. I want the Chinese ARAs to know that I am holding the Western fort for them, and letting the world know of their heroic deeds, and inciting people in their support.

About the assistance by police, my first thought was: Try rescuing a truckful of chickens or pigs here in Canada or the USA and see what the police would do. Right now, China is lawless on this issue, so it is anyone’s call on the spot, so I also commend the police for choosing to cooperate with the ARAs rather than what I might have expected – to arrest them. China is right now working on a new animal-protection legislation, but it won’t come to light till 2013. So, right now, it is like the Wild West, and the “sheriff” just happens to side with the “outlaws”.

Reported here is by no means an isolated incident. These highway rescues have been happening in various part of the country over the last few years.

Chinese demo

Not just highway rescues, but large demos. Anyone looking at China before, say, 2008 would see a very different picture. Go to [Hand in Hand with Asia's Animal Activists] and you will get an eyeful of the new Chinese activism. I ask all to join in their support, instead of the same old same old Chinese-bashing, from verbal extremes of “I HATE the Chinese!”, “All Chinese are evil!”, and “Let’s go kill a Chink!” to physical street level beating (need I post a video of a Chinese kid being beaten up by a bunch of white thugs in Chicago?). All who have made such comments (not in this thread) should be mindful that they are including the Chinese ARAs themselves in this abuse, myself included, and my family, my Chinese friends and colleagues, NONE OF WHOM has ever eaten cats or dogs, much less skinned one alive. Such widely accepted racism is currently running rampant in a movement supposedly based on anti-Speciesism (what is wrong with this picture?), and no authority in the movement has stood up (other than Dr. Best here) to address this issue. The severity of the language reminds me of what was directed at the Jews of Europe in the 1930s. By the same token, I am seriously concerned about the possibility of a Chinese holocaust in the not too distant future which could rival or even surpass the Jewish one in the 1940s.

Having lived in the Western world since 1965, I have seen numerous cruel and evil acts against animals, from factory farms to “sport” hunting to bow-hunting to the Canadian seal hunt to the Bayou alligator slaughter to Western fur farms...

... to leg-hold trapping to rodeo to animal circuses to animal experimentation and vivisection to tearing the heads of turtles off with the contestants’ bare hands in some “Snapping Turtle Fest” in homeland America (need I post a video of this so that the people of other cultures could likewise over-generalize that all Americans are cruel and evil?)… I’ve found often that the finger pointers are often “far sighted”, who can see what goes on in a back alley in China, but blind to what goes on in their own backyard.

The big difference is that these atrocities in the West are often well hidden whereas those in China are wide in the open. This cruelty-concealment is done in a big way by GOVERNMENT – witness the [Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act] which makes taking behind-the-scenes pictures and videos of factory farms and circuses and rodeos and research labs a federal crime punishable by jail time. This amounts to deception on top of cruelty, and I ask American finger-pointers to please take a look at their own culture. Their culture says, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”, “Remove the beam in your eye before worrying about the mote in others’.”, down to “Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself” by Eric Clapton.

The big Chinese crime is against cats and dogs, and I join in the condemnation, since I love cats and dogs and have served as guardian for a few of them in my own home. But many of the very same condemners eat meat and use animal products. To put things in some perspective, the number of dogs eaten in ALL OF ASIA amounts to about 16 million, cats about 4 million, with China’s share about 50%, or 8 million dogs and 2 millions cats, and that is in a population of 1300 million, whereas in the U.S.,with a population of only 300 million, the number of chickens killed per year amounts to some 870 million (not to mention the condition they have to “live” in, which is no better than that of the dogs-in-cages shown here), turkeys 240 million, pigs 113 million, cows 33 million, whitetail deer 10 million…

10 damning facts about American-style hunting

This is in response to an American hunter defending her own first hand deer-killing while condemning other cultures for their offenses.

First, no ifs and buts, America is the hunting capital of the world. American hunters, numbering about 15 million, kill upwards of 10 million whitetail deer every year, plus deer of other species, plus bears, moose, elk... plus millions of duck and geese and pigeons, plus, going to Africa to hunt elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, buffalo (the "Big 5"), some even boasting of killing elephants and critically endangered rhinos with arrows, plus coming to Canada to hunt "Big Game", e.g. Grizzly bears, Big Horn sheep... (The Chinese people do NONE of this.)

Second, I commend you for speaking out as a 16 yo. When I was 16, all I wanted to do was to play soccer. And I also respect you for your love for cats and dogs. But you are inaccurate to say that Americans do not eat dogs. Two of your national heroes, Merywether Lewis and William Clark, ate dogs regularly on their expedition.

Third, About your claim that deer "reproduce 10 times faster than humans", again it is a fallacy. I am the head of the Global Anti- Hunting Coalition and invite you to go there to take a good look at what American hunting is all about. I have dealt with hunting issues since 1996, especially whitetail deer hunting in America. First, American hunters kill upwards of 10 million whitetail deer, mostly for "sport" and trophy, but always trying to justify killing for fun as killing for food, although I have never seen any hunter leaving a trophy rack behind.

Fourth, about a deer's reproductive rate, it varies with the amount of food available. When food is in short supply, the deer have no fawns or singletons at most. When food is in plentiful supply, deer have twins and triplets. So, controlling deer's population by culling simply does not work, and is no more than a public-fooling tactic to gain public acceptance and support while indulging in their cruelty. By cutting down the population of deer by 50%, you increase the food per remaining deer by 200%, thus boosting the deer's reproductive rate. Hunters know this, and use this to perpetrate their atrocity especially in urban areas, the domain of the bow-hunters. Every year, they force their way into urban areas, claim deer overpopulation, kill off 50% or more of the deer, the deer rebound (called the Compensatory Rebound Effect), and the hunters come in the next year, claiming deer overpopulation, again. This alone shows that deer population "control" by hunting only serves to increase the deer population for hunting purposes.

Fifth, as with cats and dogs, there is a well established and well tested technology called ImmunoContraception (IC) already approved by both the FDA and the EPA, which can control deer population without killing them, but of course this would displace hunting-culling as a population control mechanism. And since all American governments on all levels are run by hunters or those politicians bought by hunting lobby, of course the use of IC has been all but banned.

Sixth, since you object to cat/cat killing, first look in your own country. Bow-hunters have been clamoring for bow-hunting stray cats and dog in urban areas. Seventh, where do you think the hunters get their 10 million extra deer to hunt every year from? Again they use the principle that the more deer food, the more deer. So they plant "food plots" of rich deer food like deer clover and rape (google) all over the country to max out the deer population - for hunting purposes - then blame the deer for causing traffic accidents. They even claim ecological damage by deer in certain urban parks (e.g. the Trexler Nature Preserve in Allentown PA - google "Anthony Marr Trexler"), and when you go into the park (which I did), what you see is acres of forest ploughed down, with rape and deer clover food-plots planted in its place. Of course innocent people like you swallow it line, hook and sinker, and not only support deer hunting, but participate in it.

Eighth, It never ceases to amaze me how people who seem to love animals so much and condemn other cultures for eating certain animals, would have no problem personally shooting an arrow into a beautiful deer in their own backyard.

Ninth, by the way, the huntersd know that by boosting the deer population by 10-20 million per year for hunting purposes, they would increase the number of human fatalities on highways due to deer-vehicle collisions. This has proven consistent year after year that an extra 100 or so human deaths would result. And, I repeat, the hunters know about this stat, but they do the food-plot thing anyway to satisfy their blood-lust. I call this pre-meditated mass murder or even terrorism. I hope you don't become one of the victims, but if you support this practice, and get hurt or killed on the highway, you have no one else to blame but yourself.

Tenth, one more thing about American hunting, and that is the very popular bow-hunting. The non-lethal wounding rate of bow-hunting is about 50%, meaning that of every 100 deer shot by arrows, 50 stagger around for days, weeks, even months, with one or more arrows stuck in non-vital parts of their bodies. (See cover pic and bottom pic showing deer with arrow stuck in heads, in the former case the eye.) And this is not horrendous cruelty?

How vegan are you?

Many a time over the years have I been questioned on my veganism and activism. Here is a typical conversation:

Q: Anthony, are you vegan?

A: The V on my bike stands for "Vegan", though also for "Victory".

Q: How vegan are you?

A: How do you quantify veganism?

Q: Are you 100% vegan?

A: I try to be, but safer to say 99%, since we could never be sure what products we use contain exactly what ingredients.

Q: 99%-vegan is not vegan at all.

A: You have the right to consider me whatever you want.

Q: You say you try to be 100% vegan. How hard do you try?

A: Well, I see some 99%-vegans spending 99% of their energy making sure they get the final 1%, and other-99% vegans spending 99% of their energy in activism for the animals and the environment. I prefer the latter kind.

Q: I hear that you used to ride horses.

A: I still do, whenever I get a chance.

Q: I'm sure the horse hates being ridden.

A: He knows the sound of my car. Every time I go to the stable, he'd come gallop across the pasture to greet me, and I never ever bring apples or carrots. What I do bring is love.

Q: So you put a bridle on him and make him go where you want him to go. This violates AR principles.

A: Really? What principle is that?

Q: To not dominate another species.

A: And you don't?

Q: Of course not!

A: How often do you walk your dog?

Q: What's this got to do with anything?"

A: How often?

Q: Twice a day.

A: Do you let him run free?

Q: Of course not. I use a leash."

A: I rest my case.

Q: It is not the same.

A: Okay, tell me, how many wild animals live in your house? - Deer, bears, foxes, rats, field mice... how many?

Q: None.

A: So, how non-dominantly did you do it?

Q: Do what?

A: Evict these animals from this piece of land now occupied by your house, which used to be their home?

Where did Cain's wife come from?

This morning I again ran into the brick wall of religious Fundamentalism, this time in the following quote from www.Bible-Knowledge.com: "As Christians we have to believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible."

My immediate response is: No, Christians do NOT have to. Having absorbed 5 years of Christian and biblical training in secondary school, I am familiar with the Christian doctrine, the history of the Church and Christianity itself. Of course the quote at once defines the writer as a Fundamentalist, not someone with whom not all Christians except those on the far right, nor I, would be philosophically aligned. But, very well, I will play by his rule for a moment, and see where such a literal approach will lead us, start with the account of creation in the Book of Genesis itself. Quote:

3. Does the Christian Fundamentalist really believe that "the first woman" was made out of a rib of "the first man"?

4. If the Land of Nod lay beyond "the presence of the Lord", was "the Lord" then not omnipresent?

5. Did Adam and Eve have navels?

6. Where did Cain's wife come from?

I really want to know, because all Americans may be ruled by one such person after the November election.

Behind Blue Eyes

At this time within the AR movement is a large Chinese-bashing subculture going on, which runs rampant, unmoderated and uncontrolled, mostly by the West against "the Chinese" for eating cats and dogs. This bashing often reaches crescendos of hatred rivalled only by the hatred against the Jews in the 1930s and 1940s. The purpose of this piece is to show how ludicrously and ridiculously illogical this subculture is.

First, a disclaimer: I am a vegan, i.e. I do not ingest any meat, dairy products or eggs. This said, I have the license to critique the eating of meat of any kind, be it the meat of cows, pigs, chickens, whales, dolphins, fish, deer, dogs or cat.

Since I do not eat meat, of course I object to the eating of cat meat and dog meat. But do I see the eating of cow meat and pig meat and chicken meat or deer meat to be any better? Absolutely not! Eating of any meat of any species by a species that has the choice to go vegan but by and large does not is morally wrong, regardless of culture, pure and simple.

I see it as the height of arrogance and hypocrisy for a culture over 95% of whose population eat beef, pork, chicken and deer to bash another culture less than 1% of whose population eat dogs or cats.

Here is the math:

In USA:
8.7 BILLION chickens
33.3 million cattle
246 million turkeys
2.2 million sheep and lambs
113.6 million hogs
and 10 million deer
are killed every year for meat.

In Asia:
16 million dogs
4 million cats
are killed for meat every year.

In China:
8 million dogs
2 million cats

We are talking 300 million Americans eating 10 BILLION chickens, cows, pigs and deer versus 1400 million Chinese eating 10 million cats and dogs.

We are talking about each American eating on average 33 animals (chickens, cows, pigs, deer) per year versus each Chinese eating 0.008 cats/dogs per year. And the former is bashing the latter for being evil.

Of course the Chinese also eat beef, pork and chicken, though no venison, but even factoring this in, it is far far less per capita that in the U.S.A. or Canada.

So, bash on, but be ashamed, very ashamed, and mark the saying, "Every time you point one finger, you point 3 at yourself."

"Baby Harp Seals being drowned, crushed amid melting ice" Nat. Geo.

As global warming progresses, the Arctic sea ice diminishes from year to year, and Harp seal pups are dying in progressively larger and larger numbers, within days, hours, even minutes of birth. Yet, while AFP ran an article titled ['Dramatic' loss of harp seals amid warming: study], the Global and Mail ran one titled [Newfoundland calls on Ottawa to fight for sealing industry].

Is our species so undignified and weak that we prove incapable of quitting voluntarily while we still can, and have to keep exploiting until being forced by Mother Nature herself to quit, when there will be no more seals?

And shame on Ottawa for protecting the sealers rather than the seals, while pushing the tar sands to the hilt, worsening global warming and hastening the demise of the Arctic sea ice, thus the polar bears and the seals.

This applies also to our addiction to oil. It is not the seals, not the oil, but our own lack of conscience, discipline and moral character.

In his box of books in the jeep were another two, titled [SOCIOBIOLOGY] and [INSECT SOCIETIES], both heavy-duty hard-covers by the great scientist Edward O. Wilson. Today, he brought them out to read about termite mounds.

On p. 317 of [INSECT SOCIETIES], titled [The Superorganism Concept and Beyond], he read:

[The idea of homeostasis leads easily to the visualization of the entire insect colony as a kind of superorganism. In fact, the story of the superorganism concept, from its origin as a philosophical idea sixty years ago to its present sharp decline in contemporary thinking, should prove instructive to historians of science as well as to biologists with a more immediate interest in the subject. During some forty years, from 1911 to about 1950, this concept was a dominant theme in the literature on social insects. Then, at the seeming peak of its maturity it faded, and today it is seldom explicitly discussed...

[... the current generation of students of social insects... saw its future in stepwise experimental work in narrowly conceived problems, and it has chosen to ignore the superorganism concept... Seldom has so ambitious a scientific concept been so quickly and almost totally discarded.

[The superorganism concept faded not because it was wrong but because it no longer seemed relevant. It is not necessary to invoke the concept in order to commence work on animal societies. The concept offers no techniques, measurements, or even definitions by which the intricate phenomena in genetics, behaviour, and physiology can be unraveled. It is even difficult to cite examples where the conscious use of the idea led to a new discovery in animal sociology...

[... But it would be wrong to overlook the significant, albeit semiconscious, role this idea had played in the history of the subject...

[Finally, it might be asked what vision, if any, has replaced the superorganism concept… there is no new holistic conception...]

“So, what does this leave us?” I asked Raminothna. “It seems that the door has been slammed shut on the concept decades ago.”

“It is about to open again.”

“It slammed shut for a reason. Is the reason gone?”

“Yes it is.”

“And what is this reason?”

“There are several reasons.”

"Such as?"

"Tell me. Have they ever considered a human-based society as a superorganism?"

"Not in these books."

"And have they considered if the insect societies have the ability to form higher societies of their own?"

"No, and I've never thought of it myself either."

"Did the Superorganism concept considered the sociality of the superorganisms at all?"

"Not at all."

"Finally, a big problem resides right there in its very name."

“What? 'Superorganism'? Why? I thought it sounded fascinating, and should have raised widespread interest."

"It did, but only for 4 decades, then lost it. To raise interest is one thing, to keep it raised is another."

"So, what's wrong with its name?"

"Tell me. If you call a society of organisms a superorganism, what would you call a society of superorganisms?"

"Assuming that superorganisms can form societies of their own, of course?"

"Of course."

"If a society of organisms is a superorganism, then a society of superorganisms can only be called a 'Supersuperorganism'."

"And what do you call a society of supersuperorganism?"

"A supersupersuperorganism. Um, I think I'm beginning to see what you mean. It is cumbersome, to say the least."

"'To say the least' is right. More so, it is unsystematic."

"So what’s your solution?”

“What’s yours?”

“Well, first, we have established that the termite cell, termite and the termite mound are all organisms.”

“Yes, we have.”

“Wait. No, we haven’t. The termite cell is not an organism, is it? It is only a body cell of a termite which is an organism.”

“Why?”

“Because… it has lost its independence, for one thing.”

“Is this the only reason?”

“Isn’t it enough?”

“Not really.”

“Why not?”

“You did say that a termite an organism, didn’t you?”

“Yes I did.”

“Just like a grasshopper or a dragonfly is an organism?”

“Right.”

“Can a grasshopper. Live on its own?”

“Yes, it can.”

“Can a dragonfly live on its own?”

“Yes, it can.”

“Can a termite or a bee live on its own?”

“No.”

“Has it lost its independence?”

“Yes it has."

"But your still consider the termite an organism."

"Yes, I do. I see what you mean. A body-cell of a termite, or dragonfly, in spite of its sociality, is nonetheless a bona fide organism, albeit a social one."

“So how do you solve the problem of the superorganism now?” I asked him what he asked me.

"It is very clear to me now," he said with light in his eyes. "Get rid of the prefix 'Super'. All are organisms, but on 3 different levels of organization - at least three: the Cellular, the Metazoan, and the Tribal. No more 'super super'!"

"Good"

“And on each level of organization, there are nonsocial and social organisms.”

“Very good.”

“I can even write a simple equation to describe these levels: Society (X) = Organism (X+1), or Organism (X) = Society (X-1).”

“Excellent.”

“This is so obvious, why didn’t they think of it?”

“What did Thomas Huxley say after reading Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species?”

“I believe he said these very same words: 'This is so obvious why didn’t I think of it?'”

“A common question for the cerebral silver medalists.”

2-03 – Organism as Society, Society as Organism

There was a large mixed herd of Zebra and wildebeest grazing in the meadow, among the widely dispersed acacia trees and what looked like sandstone spires up to 20' tall. The landscape was so bright it was brilliant. The air was so silent it hissed. On the African savannah he was automatically silent, and whatever he said to anyone, principally himself, was done in a whisper.

And he whispered, "This is truly the holy of holies. It's no St. Peter’s Cathedral, only infinitely greater. The least of God's creation, so to speak, is greater than greatest production of man."

And I whispered back within him, "Ultimately, the Universe Itself is the supreme cathedral, the Earth is one of Its innumerable chambers of worship, and life is the act of worship itself."

He fell down on his knees in whatever humility a human being was capable, and in this attitude, he received a glimpse of perceptual pliancy in the 4th dimension.

"Take a mental time-lapse movie of this meadow covering a hundred years, then play it back in a hundred seconds. Tell me what you see after you have seen it," I instructed him.

He looked intensely at the meadow for what seemed like a hundred years, then said, “Yes, I saw what I think you wanted me to see. But I don’t see what point you’re trying to make.”

“What did you see?”

“Well, first, I saw the grass covering the meadow. It was like a shimmering carpet alternating green and brown once every second, that is, once every year in real time.”

“Good start.”

“Next, the trees. They sprouted from the ground, mushroomed to full stature, then suddenly collapsed, and eventually crumbled to nothing, all within a few dozen seconds, decades that is, each in its own time of course."

"Go on."

"And while they live, they give off once-per-second flowering flashes.”

“Good.”

“And the animals. They're individually invisible, because they move too fast. Instead, they formed a ground-hugging probability cloud, with a thin aerial probability haze for the birds.”

“Excellent. Now that the stage is set, let's bring on the living spires.”

“The living spires, yes. They behaved just like the trees. They sprout from the ground just like the trees, mushroom to full size just like the trees, then suddenly dying and eventually crumbling to nothing, just like the trees, all within several dozen seconds just like the trees, each in its own time of course, just like the trees. And while they live, just like the trees, they also give off once-per-second flashes, which in their case comprises the release and swarming of reproductive units from all the spires simultaneously. This is what you want me to see, isn’t it?”

“And what do you make of it?”

“On the understanding that these spires are in fact termite mounds, I surmise that your point is that a termite mound is as alive as a tree."

“Yes, but not far enough.”

“I would have thought that to call a termite mound alive is already going a little too far, since only the termites are alive, but not the shell of the mound.”

“Is this like saying that calling a crab alive is going a little too far, since only its cells are alive, but not its shell?”

“But a crab is a bona fide organism – a certified living thing.”

“Aha, now we’re getting somewhere.”

“You’re not actually saying that a termite mound is a bona fide organism, are you?”

“Isn’t it?”

“Well, there is one test I learned in high school that can answer this for certain. I can run it through the gauntlet of classical biology’s Seven Vital Functions. A candidate entity must possess all seven vital functions to qualify as a bona fide organism.”

“Sure. Do it.”

“Okay. The First Vital Function is Nutrition. A bona fide organism needs to ingest materials of some kind, be it solar energy, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide and certain minerals in the case of plants, and plants and other animals in the case of animals. The termite mound does need to ingest materials, which includes grass, leaves and dead wood.”

“Do the termites themselves ingest the grass, leaves and dead wood?”

“Actually, they do not.”

“What do they ingest?”

“They ingest a specific species of fungus that grows on a substrate composed of mulched grass, leaves and wood.”

“So, what exactly is the food for the termite mound?”

“Grass, leaves and wood.”

“And the fungus?”

“An intermediate product of the mound’s physiology.”

"Move on.”

“The Second Vital Function is Excretion. An organism needs to remove waste material from itself. The mound does discharge waste material, such as exhausted fungal substrate, uneaten fungal parts, miscellaneous debris and dead termites.”

“And the termite’s own excreta?”

“It is used as a cement for the shell and internal partitions of the mound."

"So the termites’ own excretion is not the termite mound’s excretion?"

"Looks not. The termites' own excreta is the internal secretion of the mound for building the shell of the mound, equivalent to the secretions of those crab cells which builds the shell of the crab.”

“Go on.”

“The Third Vital Function is Reactivity. The mound does react to external stimuli. If attacked, e.g. by ants, ant-eaters, etc., it defends itself - by means of its soldiers. If damaged, it heals itself - by means of the major workers.”

“Go on.”

“The Fourth Vital Function is Movement. Movements of the termites within the mound notwithstanding, the mound itself can send out a stream of termites, like a tentacle, to procure food. So, in fact, a termite mound as a whole has more power of movement than a tree.”

"Go on."

“The Fifth Vital Function is Growth. The termite mound does grow, as our virtual video demonstrated, in physical size as well as its internal termite population."

"Go on."

“The Sixth Vital Function is Homeostasis. The termite mound can maintain its own core temperature to within one degree year round regardless of external air temperature. If heated, it cools itself by having the minor workers to go down to the water table via tunnels dug by the major workers, sometimes meters down, each bringing back a droplet of water in its jaws, which they would then stick onto a partition wall, thus cooling the mound. If chilled, the mound warms itself by the termites clustering at the core, thus maintaining its core temperature. Another aspect of Homeostasis is that if disturbed, the mound has a tendency to return to its 'default' order."

"Go on."

“The Seventh Vital Function is Reproduction. The termite mounds do reproduce.”

“Are you referring to the termites themselves reproducing?”

“No. As pointed out before, termite reproduction is actually the growth of the mound. Mound reproduction is old mounds begetting new mounds. And the new mounds, and their termite constituents, are genetically and memetically the same as the old mounds.”

“And so?”

“So, now, I conclude that a termite mound is a bona fide organism, a certified living thing, according to classical biology.”

“There is even an Eighth Vital Function, if you’re interested.”

“Really? Do tell."

“Evolution."

"I see."

"Not only do the termite cells evolve, and the termites evolve, the mounds evolve as well - in size, shape, internal structure, and the societal termite species within.”

“Okay, consider me convinced. A termite cell, a termite and a termite mound are all fide societies organisms, just on different levels of organization."

"How many levels of organizations have you seen so far?"

"Three: the Cellular, the Metabion, and the, let's say, Tribal levels of organization. And on each level, there seems to be nonsocial and social units.”

"You have it right and straight."

"So, what is the significance of all this?

“’Society as organism’ is an extremely important concept in its own right, an a central founding principle of the Omniscientific Cosmology.”

For those who love cats and dogs, but have not supported the anti-hunting cause, here are 30 reasons why they should:

Note 1: Shown here are cats and dogs wounded or killed by arrows only, meaning, there are numerous others wounded or killed by bullets, shots or pellets.

Note 2: Bow-hunters are extremely aggressive in pushing bow-hunting into urban areas where the discharge of firearms is prohibited, targeting urban deer, stray dogs and cats.

Note 3: Children can hunt and main and kill before they can drive. Some begin as soon as they can pull the trigger, perhaps around 4-5.

Note 4: There are no controls as to who can buy bows and arrows, and in most case, guns. Some children play with these lethal weapons like toys. The degree of cruelty usually depends on their parents.

Note 5: None of the above cases occurred in Asia, if you know what I mean.

How 2 arrows killed 2 dozen lions

When I was in Africa a couple of decades ago, I camped for a stretch in the territory of a lion pride comprising 3 males, 10 females and 22 cubs.

The 3 pride-males, named Agamemnon, Achilles and Hector (AAH), were about 6 years of age and very much in their prime. Their 22 cubs were thriving under their protection - protection against predators,

and the coalition of four 4-year-old prideless bachelors, who had been loitering in the neighborhood.

Due to the superior fighting prowess of AAH, they had been kicking the butts of the Gang of Four (GOF), so far. If the GOF drove out or killed AAH, they would kill all their cubs so that the lionesses would have cubs bearing their genes. AAH would be able to repel GOF for another couple of years, which was a fairly stable scenario in lion terms. What was unforeseen was that a trophy hunter killed Achilles, though Achilles also killed him.

Now with only Agamemnon and Hector holding the fort, they were no match for the GOF. Valiantly, AH tried to defend their offspring, but it was a matter of fighting to the last cub before they both were killed. The 10 lionesses became the spoils of war. And so, a new leonine dynasty was born. But through it all, two dozen lion lives were lost, all due to the arrows (or bullets for that matter) fired by one egomaniacal trophy hunter.

Shame on Safari Club International! And shame on you Mr. President (applicable to all presidents and presidential candidates), for supporting hunting.

1. Rhino-horn use in tradition Chinese medicine - being phased out.

2. Poaching - on the rise.

3. Trophy Hunting - as part of Big-5-Hunting (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo), legal in 6 African countries, especially South Africa. Of these, rhinos fetch the most money - up to $300,000 per hunt. Hunters claim that it is conservation funding for the host countries, but only $1000-$2000 go to the host countries as license fees, the rest go to the hunting guide-outfitters. Both the hunters and the outfitters are by and large American.

I.T. - 2-02 - Perceptual Pliancy for Cosmic Consciousness

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

He woke up from the dream still submerged in the amoeba's scale of perception, such that, as soon as he stood up, he felt as if he was ten miles tall, and had to sit down to prevent toppling over.

The pond, which was but 60 feet away, now looked like a lake, but one a hundred miles distant. There was a dragonfly poised on a bulrush stalk at the edge of the pond, and though they looked small, on the amoeba's scale they were enormous, so his eyes saw them as being huge, but very far away.

Further to this space dilation, even beauty was enhanced. Take the pond, for instance. Were it really a lake a hundred miles away, it would look discoloured and hazy, but now, it looked crystal clear, with its colours in shining in all their glory. The only way his eyes could handle this was to interpret the pond, the bulrush and the dragonfly as all emitting some kind of inner light, and that the air was 110% smog-free. This invoked Aldous Huxley's hallucination in "The Doors of Perception".

"What you are experiencing is what is known as Perceptual Pliancy, which is essential for Cosmic Consciousness." I commented.

"I see what you mean," he said, entranced.

"What is the one word that comes to mind while perceiving yourself as being ten miles tall?"

He hunted for the word, then said, "Majestic."

"How about a down-and-out homeless person on skid road?"

"Down and out, but still majestic."

"And the dragonfly?"

"I'm awed by it, as I would be by the starship Enterprise were it hovering right in front of me."

"You may now consider you having experienced half of Perceptual Pliancy."

"What is the other half?"

"What you have experienced is to see the small as large, or the tiny as huge, depending on the degree of spatial dilation involved. The other half of Perceptual Pliancy is to see the large as small, or the huge as tiny, depending on the spatial contraction involved."

"So how can I experience this other half?"

"Soon you shall see."

While still on spatial dilation, he regarded the landscape all around - the acacia trees, the soaring eagles, the wild flowers, the bees, the termite mounds, even a blade of grass... are all majesty personified, the present tense appropriate to their majesty's being timeless. And how could he bypass the butterflies, which should have been called the Beautifly, one of which having just landed on a flower within arm's reach.

I posed to him a puzzle. "As a cell, is the amoeba social or non-social?"

"We've been through this before. As a cell an amoeba is non-social."

"And the egg of a butterfly, or any cell in its body, is it social or non-social."

"Social."

"What is the product of Integrative Transcendence of social cells?"

"A cellular society called a Multicellular Organism."

"'Multicelluar Organism', being two words, is cumbersome for future use. Give me a single word for it."

"In biology, a multicellular animal is called a Metazoan."

"What about a multicellular plant?"

"Hm, I don't think there is any such word. You might call it a 'Metaphyta', I suppose."

"Give me a single word for 'Multicellular Organism', embracing both animals and plants."

"I could make up one. How about 'Metabion'?"

"'Metabion' it is. So then, is a metabion, say a dragonfly, or butterfly, social or non-social?"

"Both are non-social."

"Do you see any Social Metabions around here?"

"I do. There are bees, ants, termites, lions, and the Masai."

"What is a society of bees called?"

"A hive."

"What is a society of lions called?"

"A pride."

"What is a society Masais called?"

"A boma, or village"

"What is your own society called?"

"A city, called Vancouver, of a country called Canada."

"So now, abstractly, what do you see?"

He pondered for some time. "Abstractly, I see a multi-levelled structure of at least two levels - the Cellular level and the Metabion level - each comprising nonsocial and social organisms."

"And, abstractly, what do you call one of these levels?"

"I don't know what you mean."

"Give a generic word for one of these levels."

"I still don't..."

"If I ask you to fill in the blank, what would you put into the blank in 'Level of _______"?

Again, he pondered, then said, "'Organization'. I would call each level a 'Level of Organization'."

"You got it."

What kind of World Order is this?

In this chart of the world's top military, #1 outspends #2-thru-#20 combined.

Of the global annual military expenditure of ~$1.6 trillion (2008, and increasing),...

... #1 spends 44% at ~$711 billion, with #2 a distant second at ~$121 billion or 7%.

At the same time, #1 has to borrow the billions from #2 - to "hold (#2) militarily at bay", while at home, jobs are dropping like flies, home-owners become the homeless, people have no medical insurance, and there is no money to build a needed green infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Mother Earth is sick and her own medical bill is stacking up with no nation volunteering to pay their share of it. She is mad as hell and won't take it any more, and #1 will be among the first to feel her wrath.

Pray tell, #1, where is the sense in all of this?

In the early morning of New Year's Day, he awoke from a dream that gave him a first clue of what this "inconceivable" Tao might be.

It would be strange enough for a human to dream of being a non-human - a lion maybe, an eagle, even a dragonfly, but of everything on Earth, he dreamed of being an amoeba, one living on the bottom of the pond beside which he was sleeping.

"He", the amoeba, had climbed up the stem of a bulrush, a “Stairway to Heaven” in amoebal lingo, for the pond was his universe, the realm beyond which being "Heaven".

He was pushing as hard as he could to penetrate the water/air barrier, in vain. Finally, in frustration, exhaustion and resignation, he began his dispirited descent back towards his bottom-feeding, amoeba-eat-amoeba existence, when he heard, “What are you doing, my friend?”

He looked around and encountered a spherical being attached to the Stairway, glowing luminously in the filtered moonlight. Despite its being many sizes larger than him, it seemed benign, and he felt at ease.

“I'm trying to go to Heaven," he said, without shame.

"I'm glad you've failed, since you would have died had you succeeded."

"Who are you?”

“My name is Raminothna."

"What are you?"

"I am an egg.”

“What is an egg?”

"An egg is a single cell that will develop into a multicellular organism."

"What is a, what you say, multicellular organism?"

"In the present context, it is something that, unlike you, can go to your Heaven - without dying in the process."

“I want so badly to go!" he lamented without reservation. "I'm tired of my mundane existence. I want to transcend to a higher realm and live with the gods!”

“I can appreciate the sentiment, but I’m afraid you are going about it the wrong way,” said the egg without condescension.

“Oh yeah? Well, if you know the right way, why are you still stuck in here, eh? At least I have some freedom of movement, unlike you!”

“I will be out of this pond before the next full moon.”

"You are quite sure of yourself, aren't you?"

"I know what will happen."

"So, how will it happen?"

“By means of Integrative Transcendence."

"Come again?"

"Integrative Transcendence."

"Two huge words. I can't handle even one of it."

"Tell me. How do you reproduce?”

“I beg your pardon?"

"How do you reproduce?"

"That’s a bit personal, don't you think?”

“You did ask.”

“Okay, I reproduce asexually, by dividing into two, then two into four, four into eight, eight into sixteen, and so on. How about you?”

“The same.”

“So, what is the difference?”

“You are a single cell and I'm a single cell, but the difference lies in how we reproduce, and how our descendants will behave. Now tell me. Are your descendants detached or attached to each other?”

“Detached.”

“Are they differentiated or identical?”

“Identical.“

“Are they mutually competitive or cooperative?”

“Mutually competitive, for food - bacteria mostly, if not other amoebae. And what about your descendants? Are they detached or attached?”

“They are attached to each other.”

“So they can't crawl about as we do?”

“No, they cannot.”

“So, they don't even have the freedom of movement? Then I don’t see how you can teach me anything.”

“Here is how. Unlike your descendants, mine will be differentiated in relation to each other, both structurally and behaviorally. And though they will be stuck fast to each other, they will share a discontinuously higher level of collective freedom.”

“I don't see it.”

"Of course not, since you have no facility of sight."

"Now that's un-called-for!"

“My apologies. Okay, let me explain. Some of my descendants will become eyes so all can see the sights of your Heaven; others will become legs so all can walk with gigantic strides; some will form protective armor so all can live in the rarified atmosphere; still others will become wings so all can fly in the heavenly winds, not just from pond to pond, but clear over the mountain, not at your amoebal speed of a meter per day, but at 100 kilometers per hour. A quantum leap in power if you've ever imagined one.”

"Wow! What kind of a god that would that make?"

"A dragonfly."

"A DRAGONfly, sounds formidable. How big is it?"

"On your scale, immense, like a spaceship, one that can delivery its own millions of highly social crew members out of this pond into your Heaven, there to live together as one, as the living dragonfly itself."

"Can you take me along?"

"I would love to, but I can't. You are a non-social cell, and do not qualify. You'll have to socialize yourself first."

"What do you mean 'socialize'? You mean to get my kids to stick together, differentiate and cooperate? That'd never happen."

"Not for a billion years or so."

"That's an eternity!"

"But from what I hear, amoebae never die, they just multiply forever. You'll get there one day."

"You think?"

"Just remember those two words."

"Those two huge words? You'll have to run them past me again."

"No problem. Ready?"

"Ready."

I.T. - 1-11 - A New Model of the Universe

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

The part cannot understand itself without understanding the whole and its place in this whole. Therefore, to fully answer the question "What am I?", one must first understand the Universe, and his place in this Universe.

Human civilization has evolved from the original diverse religious cosmologies to the one astrophysical-scientific cosmology, not without serious cruelty and pain. The time has come for your species to build a new model of the Universe, an OMNIscientific Cosmology, one that includes not only the physical sciences, but the biological and sociological sciences as well, since the person asking the question is a biological organism of a sociological entity, and he as well as his society are integral parts of the Universe.

"The OMNSCIENTIFIC COSMOLOGY, perfect!" he enthused, without knowing what he was so enthused about.

"Be forewarned, that to know this Omniscientific Cosmology is to know meaning and purpose, which are dangerous states of mind in a world driven by lust and greed, dangerous especially to yourself."

Hypatia, who was stripped naked and flayed to death with tile shards and abalone shells by a religious mob in 415AD, appeared in his mind, then Giordano Bruno, who was burnt at the stake in 1600 after eight years of imprisonment and torture, both for espousing scientific cosmologies under the tyranny of religious cosmologies.

"But, in the case of the Omniscientific Cosmology, why would anyone wish me harm?"

"Because it is the most quintessential philosophy, and you will be their most quintessential enemy."

"And who are 'they'?"

"The Earth destroyers."

"That would include Big Oil, Big Meat, Big Bucks, Big Drugs and Big Guns, just to name to top few. And you are launching me against them?"

"In a matter of speaking."

"It'd be like striking a rock with an egg."

"Great analogy."

"Great suicide, more like."

"By the egg becoming a child, one who can use a hammer, better yet, also a chisel."

A.M. on [Hunters Now The Hunted]

The following article depicts the killing of three poachers in the Kaziranga Nation Park, Assam, India, and no doubt, there will be those who bemoan placing animals over humans.

I've been to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Africa, in its hey days (1979), and worked at the Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Ranthambhore National Parks in India, Asia, and have personally experienced the tragic poaching loss at Bandhavgarh NP of the tigress Sita and her cubs whom I had observed for two seasons (1997-1998). My own conclusion is that using lethal force is the last line of defence for saving the endangered species in both countries, and numerous others.

Rhinos of all species, and tigers for that matter, are critically endangered, to protect which we have to address 3 sides: medicinal use, poaching and trophy hunting. All three must be addressed. Rhino horn in medicinal use we have pretty much beaten to death, while rhino trophy hunting is practically ignored. This article addresses poaching, which is so rampant it is hot news. Where the protection of endangered species is concerned, we have indeed withdrawn to this last line of defense.

To those still saying that rhinos are "mere animals" and the poachers are humans, I ask them what they would say about how to deal with armed bank robbers, especially those who have already fired shots. If they say that it is justifiable for lethal force to be used by police, then, they are putting money over human lives, the robbers being humans?

In the same analogy, national parks are like banks of wildlife, and poachers are armed bank robbers.

Some will still say that under no circumstance is it justified to take human lives, except in war. I say that where saving endangered species is concerned, we are at war.

IT was after midnight when the patrolling forest guards first saw them. Five poachers crouching in the jungle, tense and braced for trouble, ready to slaughter a rhino in one of India's premier national parks. They had crept in from the north as the monsoon floodwaters ebbed, willing to risk death for the rhino's precious horn.

The guards lifted their rifles and the night exploded in a hail of bullets. Two of the poachers were killed outright; two escaped, running into the night. The remaining survivor was gravely injured, shot in the leg and in the shoulder. He fled alone, crashing through the dense vegetation, leaving a blood trail like a wounded beast.

It seems he had no shoes, or maybe he lost them somewhere in the jungle, but he ran for at least an hour, the guards close behind him. When they caught up with him, they shot him dead. Photographs of his corpse show a lean and muscular young man with a pleasant face, wearing a T-shirt and pale blue jeans.

He and two of his companions paid the ultimate price for hunting protected animals. Killed in late September in Kaziranga National Park in the northeast state of Assam, their bodies have yet to be claimed.

A remote state in a region sandwiched between China, Burma, Bhutan and Bangladesh, Assam is a bloody battleground in the world's poaching wars.

Last year, the officers working in the state's protected forests, including Kaziranga, were given immunity from prosecution if they killed suspected poachers inside park boundaries.

"They come to kill and they get killed," one guide says with satisfaction.

Forest ranger Atiqur Rahman led the team that gunned down the three poachers. He insists the poaching gang started that particular fight, spotting the guards and firing a single shot. Rahman has been in the job for two years or so, and last year he led another patrol into the central range and four poachers were shot dead. He says rangers mostly have no choice about firing. It is difficult for them to know how many guns poachers are carrying and how willing they are to use them. But no one can remember a forest guard being killed by a poacher.

The young man they shot as he tried to flee may have been armed, Rahman says, with a shrug. "My staff didn't know, but after they shot him, then they knew he had no gun."

Kaziranga is home to a thriving population of rare one-horned rhinos, animals smaller than the African rhino, but very aggressive, and happy to chase Jeeps and headbutt them, bite rangers and charge almost anyone or anything. Rhinos aren't afraid of much and the poachers use their aggression against them.

A noise or a disturbance will catch the attention of a targeted rhino, which will lower its head, ready to charge. The poacher will then shoot it through the skull. The poaching gang will then race to hack off the beast's horn with an axe. If the shot has been heard, the poachers usually have only about 15 minutes. They often take an ear, or a toenail, as well, as proof that the horn is genuine. Occasionally the shot is botched and the beast survives, hornless, for a short while before dying.

More than 2200 endangered one-horned rhinos live in Kaziranga's lush grasslands, grazing amicably with water buffalo, deer and wild elephants. Rhino calves are sometimes killed by the park's tigers, but the most threatening predator for the one-horned rhino is a man with a rifle.

Sold mostly to Chinese buyers, the horn is a valuable commodity. Wealthy Chinese consumers believe it has unique health-giving properties. Poachers can earn thousands of dollars for a few days' work. Assam is one of the poorer Indian states, with an average per capita income of about 30,000 rupees a year, less than $560. A rhino horn represents enormous, impossibly tempting wealth.

The divisional forest officer in charge of Kaziranga, D. D. Gogoi, is in charge of the battle against poachers, and he is annoyed by the suggestion they should be given more of a chance to surrender before being shot dead. Sitting in his office in the Assamese town of Bokakhat, he wants to make it clear that rangers and forest guards who shoot at poachers are entirely within their rights.

"Here officers use arms when performing their duties," he says. "The arms are provided by law. When there's a shoot-out, we are performing our duty. Sometimes that kind of encounter is wrongly interpreted. If someone is there to experience the situation, it's quite difficult, you know; it's a do-or-die situation."

Anyway, he adds, many poachers are not killed but detained, pointing out 14 were arrested last year. He declines to produce statistics of poacher deaths.

When Assam's Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain arrived to open the park in late October, Gogoi was in anxious attendance. Hussain, too, says there is no problem killing poachers --it is entirely legal. This is a widely held point of view around Kaziranga, where rhinos are popular with the wealthy tourists whose presence in Assam is a blessing for many in the local economy.

Poachers have been feeling the pressure. In a formal ceremony in October, 25-year-old Jogendra Sahro handed over a Lee Enfield .303 rifle to Kaziranga's forest guards, declaring he wouldn't hunt rhinos again. A member of the Mishing tribe, who mostly earn a living by fishing and labouring, Sahro lives in a leaf-thatched hut just outside the park.

As the trumpeting of wild elephants fills the air he admits to killing one rhino (the reality, apparently, is more like five). With his friend, 30-year-old Sukdeo Kutum, also a Mishing man, he negotiated a complicated deal years ago with some Naga hunters from Nagaland, an Indian state on the Burmese border. He was given the rifle but failed to produce any rhino horn, and he says that he was eventually held hostage by the Naga for six days while Kutum brought a rifle -- a sort of ransom -- to Nagaland. The Naga are fierce warriors and hunters (and, last century, headhunters). Many of the poachers killed in Kaziranga are thought to be Naga, including two of the three killed in September. The third, who ran away before being killed, was probably a low-caste Assamese hired as a guide.

Some Assamese say the Naga will kill anything that moves, which is why there is nothing much left to hunt in their own state, "Nothing, no birds, nothing," one guide says angrily.

The poachers who frequent Kaziranga are almost without exception hunting for rhinos, although the park is also home to a thriving population of Bengal tigers, and tiger bones are also valuable on the blackmarket.

Sahro shrugs. "We are facing a lot of troubles," he says. "The Naga are after us. But we are totally cut off from them."

He explains that when a horn is taken, the profits are split 50-50, half for the Naga, half for the guides. The horn, he says, could be sold for "five lakhs", 500,000 rupees, more than $9000. But some suggest this is wishful thinking, that guides would be paid by the day, perhaps about 50,000 rupees, more than $900.

Neither Sahro nor Kutum have any idea of why the horn is so valuable, nor what it is used for. They don't really care. Neither can read or write and they are mostly concerned about how to to feed themselves and their families.

Kutum has three children, and a cloud of gloom descends on him as he talks about the future.

"I started poaching five years ago; I was 25 when I started," he says. "I did it because of money. My family's background is very poor. I have two daughters and a son. I don't have paddy land for cultivation; sometimes I fish in the river, but it's very tough to earn a living."

He pauses, seemingly reluctant to confess his crimes to a stranger. "Then, two years ago I went into the national park to kill a rhino. The rhino charged us. We shot it, and then we had five to 10 minutes to cut the horn off."

He won't admit to more rhino killings, but he says he was always worried about being shot dead by forest guards.

"I'm scared of the forest department staff, not the animals. We are very familiar with wild animals. But I know people who have been killed by forest guards. Naren Pegu, he was my brother-in-law. He was a wanted man."

Pegu, apparently a gang leader and poacher, was shot dead by Kaziranga forest guards in December last year. His companion was shot in the hip and apparently "died of his wounds".

Uttam Saikia is one local who disapproves of shooting poachers dead. A television journalist and honorary warden of Kaziranga, he loves the park and works hard to protect the district's spectacular range of birds and animals. But rather than killing poachers, he says, they should be rehabilitated. Saikia is the voice of reason.

"Actually I'm working for anti-poaching activities," he says. "We are making a network to bring the poacher back to the mainstream."

Saikia says he has so far convinced 17 poachers, including Sahro and Kutum, to mend their ways. He isn't paid for the hours he puts in and it can be a risky business. One Mishing man told him, with weighty innuendo, that he kept a pistol to kill informers.

The forest department relies on a network of these locals who are willing to inform on poachers if the price is right. Saikia says they are paid more if their information leads to an arrest, the capture of a .303 rifle or the killing of a poacher. They get less if their lead points merely to a home-made gun.

As well as working on locals to give up poaching, Saikia has kept a wary eye on the poaching gangs of Nagaland. He speaks of men such as Bijoy Thapa, originally from Nepal; a Naga man known as Hoho; and others, all trading in protected species.

"There's numbers of gangs sitting there," Saikia says. "They are not only responsible for killing rhino, they collect the animal parts of the northeast, tiger parts, deer; they send all to the China market."

He regularly protests when he thinks people have been hastily shot dead in the park. He went to see the place where the wounded poacher was killed in September. "I'm always protesting about this kind of killing," Saikia says. "He was sheltering in a small bush. I went to the spot and saw it. It happened in the very early morning, maybe 3am. They just shot him. They should say: 'Hands up, hands up.' Why not?"

I.T. - 1-10 - To Conceive the Inconceivable

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

Another book that he has in his jeep was the Tao Teh Ching, 6th Century BC, by Lao Tzu. This copy was of Ching Dynasty vintage, in Chinese, and bore some water damage. It was also dog-eared. And on one of the dog-eared pages, there was a quatrain which he underscore in red. It said:

"Man accords his way to the Earth,
the Earth accords its way to the Sky,
the Sky accords its way to the Tao,
and the Tao simply is, according to its own Nature."

The Tao is the "Way of the Cosmos" in Western lingo.

On the margin, in his own hand, he had written: "Therefore, if we could understand what this Tao is, we should know the optimal Way of Man!"

"Where's this book from?" I asked him.

"Long story."

"Are you in a hurry?"

We were at Lake Natron, which was pink with flamingos. There was a commotion earlier when a lone hyena came charging out of the bush and grabbed a chick. The pink rose up to the sky momentarily, then resettled, minus one chick. Nonetheless, peace was restored, and it felt timeless.

"Well, it happened when I was 5 years old. My father was a high level intellectual who was sought by the Communist government in China where I was born. If he got caught, it would be summary execution of the entire family - to eliminate any chance of revenge. My family escaped by boat down the Pearl River by moonlight. By dawn, we reached Cherng Jou, an offshore island of the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. It was then it happened."

"It was then what happened?"

"The boatman gave my father this very book."

"Yes, but it doesn't quite add up," I said, though I knew the answer.

"What doesn't it add up to?"

"Your emotional state."

"What state is that?"

"You think about it more than philosophically, but as if it has something to do with your very own personal fate."

"It just might."

"In what way?"

"In such a way as to make my life a total failure."

"Explain."

"Well, the old man had a talk with my father on the boat, which my father told me about when I left Hong Kong for Canada at age 20 by plane. It has haunted me since then, and I've been failing them, so far."

"How have you been failing them?"

"By having failed to conceive the Inconceivable."

"The Inconceivable?"

"This Tao."

"Why is it inconceivable?"

"Read the very first sentence of the book."

"It says: 'The Tao that can be told is not the true Tao.'"

"This pretty much slams the door on me, doesn't it?"

"Apparently."

"Plus, one of Lao Tzu's followers said, 'If one asks what the Tao is, and another answers, neither know it.' This is a rock cast into the well after I had fallen into it."

"This explains why the subsequent Taoists had maintained a certain silence, as if they knew it."

"Well put, Raminothna, and thus the degeneration of Taoism from a school of philosophy into a house of sorcery, writing incantations and telling fortune."

"So the boatman asked your father to tell you to conceive the Tao?"

"That's right."

"Didn't he know that it was considered inconceivable?"

"He gave my father the key to solve the riddle."

"And your father gave this key to you at the Hong Kong Kai Tak airport?"

"Exactly."

"So, where is this key?"

He pointed where, only days ago, he pointed his gun. Of course I could see it clearly in his brain, but I wanted to draw it out of him. "Tell me about it," I said.

"Well, the boatman, who was a Taoistic priest by the way, said that the key was in the quatrain itself."

"Tell me this quatrain again."

"Man accords his way to the Earth,
the Earth accords its way to the Sky,
the Sky accords its way to the Tao,
and the Tao simply is, according to its own Nature."

"Before we get into it, what do you think of the current Way of Man?"

"Destructive."

"How?"

"Our current trajectory leads directly to severe damage to the Biosphere, possibly to the extent of driving hundreds of thousands of known species to extinction, and perhaps millions of species still unknown. The tropical rainforest will turn to desert, and the ocean will be acidified to the point of losing 95% of its species, including all the marine mammals, major fish species and all corals. Need I say more?"

"So, this key. What form does it take?"

"Logic, I guess.'

"How so?"

"The boatman told my father that the key word in the quatrain is 'Nature', 'that to which the Tao itself accords,' he said to my father."

"Logical."

"And that the study of Nature is Science - all the sciences to be exact: Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, Geology, Physics, Psychology, Sociology..., to cover every aspect of Nature. He even coined a name for it."

"Which is?"

"OMNI-SCIENCE, 'Omni' meaning 'all-in-one'."

"Spelled the same way as "omniscience" in the religious sense, except for the hyphon."

"I have noticed."

"Carry on."

"Well, I have studied all the sciences, which explains why it took me five years, including summer school, to earn my B.Sc. But still, I've gone nowhere in this quest for the Tao. I have no idea what it is. In fact, I've long begun to doubt if it really even exists."

"It exists."

"How do you know? How can you be sure?"

"Because I know what it is."

"You do?! Then pray tell!"

"I will. To help you conceive this Inconceivable Tao, then tell it to the world, is in large measure why I'm here. For this I have borne you a gift of peace, a book. The world can read all about what The Tao is, thus the optimal Way of Man."

"Great, thank you! So where is this book? I want to read it."

"It has yet to be written."

"When is it going to be written?"

"As soon as YOU have written it."

As if sharing his shock, the flamingos rose into the sky again. While he watched in awe, a tear fell from his eyes.

"Why are you crying?" I asked him.

"I was just thinking of the boatman. I have wronged him for doubting him. Especially given the way he died."

"How did he die?"

"Something my father has been sad about ever since. The boatman was going back to China. After he had dropped us off in Cherng Jou, he was about to set sail back the way he came, when my father asked him to please not tell anyone where we had gone. He said to my father to not be concerned, that the future of the world would rest on my discovery of the Tao, and that he would never jeopardize it by endangering me. It was then my father said something he had regretted saying for the rest of his life."

"What did he say?"

"He said, 'They can make anyone talk. Please be careful.'"

"And?"

"And the boatman said to not worry. He would give a guarantee that he would never talk. Just please get the kid to conceive the Inconceivable, for the sake of Man and the world."

"What kind of a guarantee?"

"He sailed the boat out a few hundred yards, then scuttled it."

In a dream from which he awoke this morning, he was walking in a flat and vast desert towards a volcano to the south. As he reached the north foot of the volcano, he came upon the ruins of an ancient city.

It was square shaped, set to the four points of the compass, with high external walls over ten feet thick and a mile long per side. I entered through its north gate, the one facing away from the volcano. While passing beneath the huge archway, I looked up, and saw the name of the city, carved in stone: THE CITY OF TRUTH.

Within the city, the avenues were all east-west in orientation. The blocks were of odd lengths, ranging from as few as one house to more than ten houses per block. There were no straight north-south streets to speak of. Unlike the conventional back-to-back twin-rows of houses in the normal city block, these blocks comprised single rows of houses, with their fronts facing the volcano.

The houses were built of precisely cut and fitted blocks of stone, so the ruins were in excellent condition. The walls of the houses bore carvings of verses which were well preserved, such as:
- "Animals were created for only one reason - for the use of humans as they see fit."
- "Humans are created for only one purpose - to go to Heaven."
- "Animals have no souls."
- "Animals have no rights."
- "Humans are not animals."
- "The Universe, thus the Earth and everything on it, were created in six days some four thousand years ago, and animals and humans were created only one day apart."
- "The animals include the dinosaurs, which once co-existed with the humans."
- "It is perfectly acceptable for humans to drive species to extinction; the creator can always create more."
- "It is perfectly acceptable for humans to trash the Earth, since the Creator can easily put it right, or else create another Earth."
- "Humans were created in the image of the Creator; therefore they are the be all and end all of creation.
Etc, etc.

Of special interest was the oft repeated: "Thou shalt not climb the Mountain of Illusion. The penalty is death of the body by fire, and eternal damnation of the soul."

Thus he paced the ruins, like a tiger in a cage, while his desire to climb the volcano grew ever stronger as the days crept excruciatingly by.

Finally, one day, with drying sweat and heaving breath, he found himself on the summit of the volcano, there to look down upon the city on the plain.

The scenery being breath-taking notwithstanding, the ruins began to reveal itself to him in the form of an open page, with every house a letter and every block a word. And the City of Truth read:

"Beware of the writings on the wall. The Universe is over 13 billion years old, and the Earth over 4 billion. The animals have existed in various forms for over a billion years BEFORE the first emergence of humans on Earth from the apes; they exist for their own sake. The humans are just a new branch out of the millions of branches in the evolutionary Tree of Life. They belong to the Animal Kingdom. If they have souls, then so do other animals. For the human purpose and destiny, see the OMNISCIENTIFIC COSMOLOGY. May the Tao with with you!"

09 – The Truth Seeker

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

The question "What am I?" has been haunting him since he first asked me what I was.

His first answer was, "Go ask an anthropologist." Anthropology being the study of the species Homo Sapiens, albeit by Homo Sapiens, of course it makes sense.

But not total sense. Because there are also extra-terrestrial anthropologists, who however would regard Homo Sapiens as Homo Sapiens regards a dolphin, or an eagle, or a lion. In other words, the attitude of an E.T. anthropologist is more akin to that of a human biologist than of a human anthropologist.

Anthropology, especially physical anthropology, is indispensable for human self-understanding, especially in regards to their origin. Cultural anthropology studies human sociality. But does knowing origin and sociality lead to knowing fate and destiny? Not each on its own.

Speaking of anthropology, we had the Leakeys at Olduvai Gorge half way between Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, and that is where his jeep went.

But when he first stepped out of his jeep, the first thing he saw was a ten-foot-diameter circular patches of ground denuded of grass, with a small cylindrical earth mound in the center and a crater-like hole out of which emerged an ant with a grain of sand in its jaw, which it dumped on to the sloping side of the mound.

“The Leakey's do terrific work, and Australopithecus is wonderful and important. But a creature as humble as an ant can tell you something important about your species.”

“What do you mean?”

“Tell me. When an ant digs a hole in the ground what is it digging for?”

“An ant builds subterranean nests. So when it digs, it digs for shelter.”

“Shelter from what?”

“The elements, and above ground predators, such as birds and lizards and such, although, with moles prowling the subterranean world for prey, including ants, there is really no place the ants could call safe.

“So, when a mole digs a hole into the ground, what is it digging for?”

“A mole is a subterranean hunter and dweller. So when it digs, it digs for food, and for shelter.”

“Back in Canada, you yourself have dug holes in the ground. What were you digging for?”

“Gold. But I've quit.”

“And now, we see these humans here in Olduvai Gorge, digs holes in the ground. What are they digging for?”

“They are digging for fossils and artifacts.”

“And what are these fossils and artifacts good for?”

“They tell us about where we have come from - the truth of our origin.”

“Therefore, this should tell the anthropologists themselves something of immense importance about their species of interest.”

“Namely?”

“That it is a species in possession of a certain godly quality.”

“And that is?”

“Homo Sapiens is a species that digs for truth.”

We have a creature in our garden that could make people scream

On the lighter side of life, Shannon and I have a "wildlife problem".

It is not exactly a surprise. I've thought that having a bird feeder would attract wild creatures of all kinds. In this we are not disappointed.

We've had birds of at least a half dozen species visit our yard, including sparrows, chickadees, juncos, towhees, crows, blue jays, and a couple of others we're not expert enough to identify, and not fast enough to capture on camera, by all of which we are thrilled.

Not just birds. Sooner or later, the mammals would come in. No, not the bigger kinds, like coyotes, raccoons and skunks, but the kind that could make people scream.

One day, just after dusk, we saw one of them, by flash light, taking over from what the birds had left off. We both love animals of all kinds, but this little animal really plucked at Shannon's heart string. I just watched him, fascinated. He is every bit as cute as the birds.

But then, a few days later, a whole family showed up, with a big mama and three littler ones. And further, they seemed to have taken domicile under the eves of the house. We watched them gathering the seeds, making trips back to their nest every so often. We thought that they were stashing for the winter. We then began to take it seriously.

We have no problem cohabiting with wildlife. Personally, I love the feeling to be living amongst wild creatures. But our neighbors may not take to it quite so kindly. We began to wonder whether, given the birdseeds, the rats, yes, that's what they are, would swarm. One thing we did not want to do is to stop feeding the birds.

Another thing we do not want is to harm the rats, or even traumatize them, and we certainly do not want to involve any exterminator service. So, we devised a plan where by we would trap them in a large live-trap, one that I would have to build or modify from something else, then deliver them to the huge urban forest nearby called the Pacific Spirit Park, which stretches from 16th Ave to 50th. Easier said than done.

First, we need a trap that could take the entire family. The commercially available ones can trap only one animal at a time. So I looked into Kijiji and Craigs List for a cage of some kind. Recalling my invention the Deer Auto-Assembler (DAA - please see another one of my blogs on the subject), I decided to use a one-way gate through which the rats could enter the cage, but not exit.

After some looking, I found a very nice bi-level cage with two doors, one in front, the other on top. It is the top door that I have converted into a drop-down trap door, which would return to the closed position after a rat has fallen through. On the trap door I have smear some peanut butter - the recommended rat attractant. This I have placed in the garden, today, along the low concrete wall used by the rats to move from nest to garden and back. Well, so far, not yet. They are still dining out in the garden. A little time will tell.

In the event that we did catch them, we'll drive them to the forest, take the cage to a certain depth in the forest, and let them loose. Because we'd have taken them away from their seed-stash, we'd give them a scoop of seeds to get them started, and some peanut butter. After that, they'd be on their own.

In our previous forest walks we've found different kinds of mushrooms and lichens. Hopefully, the rat have the instinct to survive. After all, this used to be their home before we took over.

I.T. - 1-07 - The Heaviest Thing

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

Though not yet the ultimate, your species has produced some fine philosophers, one of whose works happened to be in a cardboard box in the back of his jeep, in which a sentence, underscored by his own hand, reads:

"What is the heaviest thing, that I may take it upon me and rejoice in my strength!"

This was uttered by "the Weight Bearing Spirit" which, like a camel, bears the weight of his load willingly and even eagerly into the desert. The book was [Thus Spoke Zarathustra] by Friedrich Nietzsche.

And he was at the moment sitting on a rock, thinking aloud this very line. "Raminothna, what indeed is this heaviest thing, that I may take it upon me and rejoice in my strength?"

I have to admit, my name coming from him is music to my ears. So, I decided to give him the very heaviest thing that he could hope to carry. "This heaviest thing is such that once you have taken its full weight upon your hands, your feet will simultaneously rise 6 feet off the ground, bearing no weight at all."

"No kidding. Come on, you can do better than that."

"Nope. That's it."

"Let me make sure that I understand what you're saying. You're saying that the heaviest thing is such that once I have taken its full weight upon my hands, my feet will simultaneously rise 6 feet off the ground, bearing no weight at all."

"That was word for word what I just said."

"Then, I have to say that it is impossible."

"The 'I' word again? You're the Miracle Worker, remember?"

"This violates every physical law I know."

"Thus, miraculous, especially its abstract manifestations."

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"You will. In fact, you have been carrying it for some time. Thus at times, you feel overwhelmed and crushed. But now, you have me."

He carried this heavy thought into dreamland, and had a dream of levitation in ways that really could not work. It was when he was doing his morning exercises that he found his answer.

He was doing a handstand, when his feet did rise off the ground, bearing no weight at all, while he had the Heaviest Thing in the palm of his hands.

"The concept of peace is alien to Asians," so says a non-Asian

The Chinese culture is the most misunderstood and maligned culture in the world bar none, especially in the AR movement. And I, a Chinese Canadian ARA, am in the unfortunate and unenviable position of having to deal with it.

It is taking me away from my main AR work, but as long as the Chinese-bashing persists in AR, as long as the movement espousing anti-speciesism is rife with racism, I have no choice but to do this battle.

This is not about defending China or the Chinese people, though it is a motivator. It is about facts, truth, fairness and justice, and against ignorance, arrogance, prejudice and bigotry.

Some weeks ago, when China launched a new satellite, somebody wrote that China was a threat to world peace, saying, "The concept of peace is alien to Asian cultures." Really?

In 1405-1433, China, then the Ming Dynasty, sent a 200-300-ship fleet of 5-10-masted vessels down the Indian Ocean all the way to the eastern coast of Africa, 7 times. Its mission was to establish diplomatic and trade relations with the South Asian, Middle Eastern and East African kingdoms. At no point did the Chinese pillage and plunder and conquer and occupy.

The same cannot be said about the preceding and subsequent exploits of non-Chinese cultures. Cases in point: the Roman empire, the Crusade, the Spanish conquest and occupation of Central and South America, the British Empire "where the sun never sets", the British and French conquest and occupation of North America, the Arab, British, Dutch and German occupation of Africa, the Arab slave trade in and around Africa, the European and American slave trade sourcing from Africa, WW1 in Europe, WW2 in Europe and the Japanese invasion of China, etc, etc. Need I say more?

Speaking of wars, I would also suggest comparing the number of wars in Western Europe and Eastern Asia over the last 2 millennia, and seeing that the former out-number the latter easily 10 to 1.

So, the concept of peace is alien to Asians? Spoken by a non-Asian, of course.

06 – Why am I here?

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

He was reading the Sci fi Dune Messiah when he could have asked me, "Where are you from?"

“The Cosmos,” I said.

“What planet exactly?”

“I am bound by no planet.”

"Where were you born?"

"'Born' is a concept applicable to bodies."

"So, what are you?"

"'What am I?' is one of the most profound questions one could ask. If you could answer this question about yourself, you will have my answer."

"I am a human being."

"What is a human being?"

"Ask any anthropologist."

"Anthropologist can answer a part of this question, but not all of it."

"Ask any priest then."

"Even less."

"What are they missing?"

"Meaning, purpose, destiny."

"So, what is the meaning, purpose and destiny to be human?"

"Only a human can answer this."

He pondered. "I'm a human, and I can't."

"Not yet."

“Alright, how about this then: By what means did you come to this planet?”

“There are at least four general means for visiting a planet, by at least one of which have I come."

“I’m listening.”

“The first and most obvious is of course technology, involving space ships, hyperspace-craft, teleportation, creative genetics, robotics, artificial high-intelligence, time machines, and their like, of which the limitations are far exceeded by the possibilities, which, however, are often considered, by the technologically less advanced at least, to be impossible. The second, in certain circumstances a special case of the first, certain imagined forms of which being indeed impossible, is telepathy – close encounters of the fourth kind, as it were, where the visitor experiences the planet through a chosen native creature, by seeing through its eyes, walking on its feet, feeling through its heart, thinking through its mind, and working through hands – or whatever other manipulative appendages it may possess. The third is what you hinted at – to be born as a native creature of the planet, naturally, to visit the planet for one lifetime. The fourth, at times indistinguishable from the first and second, and always possible, is imagination – that of a certain highly imaginative native creature, that is, who imagines such fourth-kind encounters with such vividness as to lend credence, in its own mind at least, to the reality of such visitors as myself. And finally, the fifth, is already to have the planet within oneself."

"I know that mine is the third. Which one is yours?"

"The first, second, fourth or fifth."

"Which?"

"That is for you to find out."

"When?"

"May be tomorrow, maybe next year, maybe never. Also up to you."

"Why are you here then?"

"Ah, finally."

"Well?"

“Regardless of means, for the duration of a beamed landing, or a telepathic communion, or a pipe dream, or a lifetime, or an inward journey, as pauper or prince, for good or evil, to give or to take, in war or peace..., we are all fellow visitors of this planet at this time."

"And for what purpose?"

"We do all share one question in common: What am I here for? Some come as tourists, others as naturalists. Some come as pillagers, plunderers and destroyers, others come as protectors, preservers and saviours. Some come to propagate and perpetuate lies, others to seek and speak truth. Some come to experience the flesh, others to purify the soul. Some come to learn, some to teach and some to merely sleep. While some come to Earth to read and re-read Dune, others come back from Dune to live and deliver Earth. And while some come all this way to find Earth filled with cruelty, injustice, hypocrisy and pain, others, who feel fortunate and called upon in spite of all, hold that for every visit, regardless of circumstances, there is a joyful and meaningful purpose, or an array of joyful and meaningful purposes, from which the visitor may choose one, or more, or, alas, less. Even for those who see their sojourn on Earth as agonizing, pointless and futile, they still have the purpose to leave."

"To leave? You mean..."

“There are several means by which one can leave a planet, amongst which one of the easiest and least irreversible is to escape back to Dune. Or conversely, as we both know, to die. But for those who can stand its sheer intensity and unrelenting realism, most of all, its uncompromising truth, there is nothing on Earth to compare with Earth Messiah. My dear fellow Earth visitor, I wish you purposeful living, and joyful deliverance.”

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

Now that he had come back to life, he was again quagmired in life’s trappings. Right now, he was fuelling his jeep in Arusha, and, since he had given most of his possessions away, he had to count his pennies.

"Now I can empathize with the Prince that became the Pauper overnight," he muttered.

“How much do you still own?”

“Four grand, tops.”

“By African standards, you are a very rich man.”

“Well, true enough. But not by Canadian standards. I live in Canada, not Africa.”

“In fact, you are very rich by even Canadian standards.”

“In Canada, the four grand won’t last me two months.”

“Tell you what. I will pay you a hundred thousand dollar, right now, in exchange for all the knowledge you have acquired at university. You will still be able to sell used cars, and make a million by age 50.“

“Uh, no thanks.”

“How about this. I will pay you a million dollars in exchange for all the knowledge you have acquired since grade 6. You will still know more than 90% of all Earthlings.”

“I don't think so.”

“Okay. How about this then. I will pay you ten million dollars for your power of higher reasoning. You will still be able to function in a supermarket or a department store.”

“No way.”

I appeared to him in a dream last night – a dream of passion - in the form of the grand dame of ballet giving her farewell performance. She chose Romeo and Juliet for this grand finale of her life. And in the end, she died with Juliet, as Juliet, in the same way in which Juliet died. She and Juliet was one, loved as one, lived as one, and died as one.

He awoke in tears. "Nope, not for sale."

04 – The Phoenix Has Risen

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

His downhill trek was far more uplifting than his uphill climb. For one thing, on his way down, he was facing the stunning panorama of the teaming savannah thousands of feet below, rather than the rocks right in his face while he was climbing the days before. For another, he descended through five vegetation zones: the summit zone, the highland desert, the heather and moorland, the forest or jungle, and the "farmland zone".

But the difference was more spiritual than physical. On his way up the mountain, his "third eye" was closed; now, on his way down, it was wide open. He could have looked at the same Lobelia tree on his way up and his way down, but on the way up, it was just something he had to walk around, and on the way down, it stopped him in his tracks with its own exquisite note in the visual symphony of botanical delights. While he could have descended the 18,000 feet in one go, he did not make it back to the used jeep he bought in Arusha until the third day. And then, as I knew it would, reality came crashing down on him again.

It happened when he first caught sight of the jeep from atop a low cliff overlooking where it was haphazardly parked. There it sat, baking in the afternoon sun, awaiting his return like a faithful steed which he had abandoned to starve. When he opened the door, it unconditionally welcomed him back. When he turned the key in the ignition, the engine sprang back to life with no reluctance. All these awakened in him a sense of shame. It was when he pressed on its pedal and it began to move, that the question arose in his mind: "Where am I going?"

He thought: “Here I am, undergoing my mid-life crisis which I barely survived, with almost all my money given away and half my life spent, and nothing to show for it. Only if I was born with what I now know. What a better man by far I could have become today. What great things I would have achieved. What more of a meaningful life I could have led than the one I squandered away. Now, my life is in ruins, with nothing but a self-delusional dream of being a miracle worker. What an excuse of a coward of the highest order. What a despicable ploy of a terminal escapist. Who am I trying to kid? Now, I’m about to embark on another aimless journey to nowhere. And I don’t even know which way to turn my steering wheel...”

"Now, my life is in ruins, with nothing but a self-delusional dream of being a miracle worker. What an excuse of a coward of the highest order. What a despicable ploy of a terminal escapist." I repeated back to him.

He froze in surprise, that again I did not seem like a figment of his imagination, then exclaimed, "Hey! Don't I get any privacy around here?"

"You can read my mind too, you know. I have no privacy with you."

"So, I can have no secret from you?"

"I know all about you. What would you like me to forget?"

"All of it."

"Including 'Only if I was born with what I now know. What a better man by far I could have become today. What great things I would have achieved.'?"

"Especially this. 'Cooda"' and 'wooda', throw in 'shooda', are really not my style."

"Tell me, is your jeep in good condition?"

"Excellent shape. That's why I bought it."

"Body okay?"

"It's a 10 year-old off road vehicle. Of course there are some dents here and there, and it could use a paint job. But there's no rust."

"Miles?"

"About 100K."

"You want to wind the ODOMETER Back?"

"Of course not. It would be illegal, and immoral. And it wouldn't make it run any better, especially since it is running like new."

"How many more miles can it run?"

"100K to 200K, depending on how it is maintained."

"Just like my own vehicle having another 35 years or more to live?"

"I was anticipating this."

"Or reading my mind."

"So, what's your point?"

"Consider yourself reborn at 35, with all your accumulated knowledge intact. Your new lifespan is shortened by 35 years, but if you make it to 70, 35 years from now, with what you now know, what a better man by far will you not have become when you get there? What great things can you not have achieved by then? What a masterpiece can you not have made of your life?”

Almost imperceptibly, the jeep began moving forward, the wheel turned with a purpose towards the Serengeti.

"WESTWARD, HO!" he roared.

03 - The Cosmic Hand of Fate

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

The sun had long set, and he was still alive. So he had averted death, for now, but what of his life?

"Thank you for saving me," he said out loud.

"Thank YOU for not crashing, my sentient Earthly vehicle."

"So I saved myself, for now, But my fate still remains. Its manifestation is just postponed. What am I destined for? Is the rest of my life written in the stars. If so, what does it say?"

"Ask a specific question."

"About?

"What matters to you most, other than yourself, that is."

"I'd say this planet."

"And what would you want to know about it?"

"I want to know its fate."

So I gave him a riddle: “Build a circle with a thousand stones. Write on a piece of paper the following words: ‘THE EARTH WILL SUCCUMB TO HUMAN DESTRUCTION.’ Crush the paper into a ball, and place it at the center of the circle. If the Earth is destined to integrate and transcend, then, before you see the sun again, a cosmic hand of fate will reach inside the circle and reduce the paper ball to ashes. If not, the Earth would die.”

He did as instructed, eagerly, by moonlight. By the time he was done, it was half way between dusk and dawn. Needless to say, it was the longest night of his life. There he sat in front of the circle of stone, shivering, praying. Several times, he nodded off, just to jolt awake again to realize that the paper ball with the message of doom was still where he had left it, intact.

I heard his prayer. It contained "God" and "Allah" and "Vishnu" and "Buddha", and every deity in between, even "Zeus" and "Isis", and even non-deities like the "Tao", but basically, he was praying for fortune for his planet Earth.

“Pray not for fortune, but for courage to face misfortune,” I said to him in between prayers.

His spiritual house-of-cards crumbled. “Is this your way of saying that the Earth won’t make it?”

“It is not in my place to tell you one way or the other. Only the Cosmic Hand of Fate can do that.”

The prayers ended. In their place was a crushing sense of self-doubt and resignation.

Imperceptibly, the eastern sky had begun to lighten. The paper ball was lying there still. The circle of stone had remained inert and cold. His heart, which had been sinking by the minute, hit rock bottom.

But as the breaking dawn threatened to shatter in this fateful night, a Cosmic Hand of Fate did reach into the circle and reduce it to ashes. In the rays of the rising sun, he regarded this Cosmic Hand of Fate, one still holding a smoldering match, which was his own.

December 21, 2012 - 365 days and counting

Today is December 21, 2011, exactly one year before December 21, 2012, the much believed and dreaded END OF DAYS.

Speculations fly as to how it will happen - from mountain-sized asteroid to mega-solar-flare to super-volcano to galactic alignment to the "rapture" to global pandemic to alien invasion to WW3 - none but the last of human cause.

This at least shows that our species has a hard time taking responsibility for its own actions, not to mention its failures.

Whether you subscribe to ancient prophesies or not, here are two things that I myself believe will happen:

1. The stock market will crash, and crash HUGE, and 2,

02 - The Miracle Worker

Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth:

Legend has it that in the snows of Kilimanjaro, the carcass of a plains leopard was found. No one knows what it had gone all the way up there to seek. But when this human creature climbed the mountain, he knew, for he was there to seek the very same thing, which the leopard evidently succeeded in finding.

At pain of extra weight, he carried a gun, not that there was much to hunt, nor to fear - but the gun itself. In four daily segments, he had made the snow line, where he dismissed his guide and porter without explanation. Another half-day’s solitary ascent brought him to this ice-cave part way up the glacier, into the depths of which he had withdrawn, from the world and from himself.

Not an hour ago, as the sun was declining in the western sky, transforming the cave into a glowing, rosy tomb, he was sitting exactly here, with the gun aimed at the temple of the temple-of-his-soul.

Some say that when one is about to die, ones past life would flash before ones eyes. While he was sitting there, shivering in the descending cold, in the meditative position that seemed fitting for his final contemplation, his past life did not exactly flash by, but was instead painstakingly replayed, episode by episode, scene by scene, which were then drained into the dungeon of his mind already brimming with pain, anger, guilt, disenchantment, purposelessness and despair.

Failing to pull the trigger after some eon-long minutes, he had set the deadline for the fatal moment, that by the time the last glow of day had faded, either his head would have been blown apart, or he would deem himself a terminal coward. In the latter case he would slink back to the meaningless existence he had climbed up here to escape, but thereafter it would be just his body undergoing the physical processes of survival, for his soul would have since irretrievably been lost.

It was when he could no longer discern the fingers of his free hand held out before his eyes, and his gun hand had started trembling from the cold and fatigue, and his trigger finger had become numb from the strain, that I finally addressed him for the first time.

“Forgive me for intruding at this final moment of your privacy,” I whispered to him, “so I will be brief, if you will allow me...”

It was not exactly a voice that he had heard, for all his ears could hear was the whistling of the wind at the mouth of the cave, but rather, a clear and unmistakable thought that seemed to have come from far beyond, or deep within, which had somehow materialized in his mind.

It is possible to plant a thought in ones mind, you know. All you'd need is a detailed 3D map of the subject's neuronal circuitry, which could be scanned within minutes given our technology, and induce a few new axon-dendrite connections in the exact places. But I'm not here to talk high biotech, which in fact is forbidden in the interstellar protocol.

Sorry, I digressed. Well, for at least a hundred of his remaining heartbeats he did not respond, and I spoke again, “Sorry to intrude in this final moment of your privacy, but we might run out of time. What I was saying is that I’m seeking a miracle worker, to work a miracle upon this Earth, for her sake and on my behalf. Since you appear to have no further use for this body of yours, this earthly instrument at your disposal, which obviously is in excellent working condition, will you donate it to me, such that the purpose of this my sojourn on this planet be fulfilled?”

This notion was clearly so outlandish and alien to him that he could hardly claim it as his own. So the first question that leapt to his mind was, “Who are you?”

So I told him truthfully, “I am Raminothna, the Fortunate and Called Upon, at your service.” Again, of course, no sound was involved, so the name Raminothna was more a feel, a vibration.

“Say again?” He just wanted to “hear” my “voice” and my name again.

“I am Raminothna, the Fortunate and Called Upon, at your service.”

“Ra-mi-noth-na? Be it as it may, that’s just a name. WHAT are you, then?”

“What am I? Yes, one of the deepest of all universal philosophical questions. I can say only this: Once you have come to know what you are, you will know what I am.”

“Look, I have no inclination, nor the time, for a philosophical discussion right now.”

“Your inclination is your choice, and you have all the time in the world.”

“Not now.”

“If not now, when?”

“Maybe never. Who cares?”

“I do.” And I DO!

“Alright, fine. Whoever, whatever you are, let’s get this over and done with. What do you want?”

“As I said, I’m asking you to be my miracle worker, to work a miracle upon this Earth, for her sake and on my behalf.”

“For me to perform a miracle? Obviously I can’t, even if I wanted to.”

“Is this a yes?”

“No.”

“Is it a no then?”

“Yes. No. I don’t know.”

“What exactly is it?”

“I mean, look at me. Do I look like a miracle worker to you? I can’t even exert five ounces of pressure on the trigger, let alone perform a miracle.”

“What does a miracle worker look like?”

“The last one I know looked like Jesus Christ.”

“And what does Jesus Christ look like?”

Da Vinci’s Last Supper materialized in my mind.

“What are these creatures?”

“What creatures?”

“The thirteen creatures depicted in this painting.”

“They are human beings, for Christ’s sake!”

“Which among these human beings is Jesus Christ?”

“The one in the middle.”

“What makes him different from the rest? They all look essentially the same to me - all human, that is, as human as you.”

“He had God in him.”

“What is God.”

“Go ask the pope.”

“Where is God?”

“Everywhere. Omnipresence – or so I’ve been told.”

“Including the space currently occupied by your body?”

“Well, yes.”

“Then you have God in you as well.”

“Look. Just like the other twelve in the painting, in fact, like the other seven billion human beings on Earth today, I’m no miracle worker. Can’t you just accept that? Let me give you a piece of advice. You are wasting your time to seek a miracle worker amongst us human beings. Those who apparently could make an elephant or themselves disappear are just illusionists using smoke and mirror. You are barking up the wrong tree.”

“Define ‘miracle’.”

“No! You are the one who want to talk about miracles. You define it!”

“Very well. Let’s say this: A miracle is an impossible physical feat with a profound spiritual significance.”

“So you’re saying I can perform not only an impossible physical feat, but one with a profound spiritual significance?”

“Exactly.”

“I’m glad we finally got this point straight. So now I can say, definitively, no ifs and buts, and for the last time, I cannot do the impossible, and for those possible things that I’ve done, none was of any significance whatsoever, which means, therefore, that I am not a miracle worker, period...”

“If I prove to you that you can, will you?”

“... and even if I were, I would not lift one finger to glorify this selfish, heartless, cruel and destructive species which I am ashamed to admit to be my own...”

“If I prove to you that you can, will you?”

“… and in fact, the more power we have, the worse we get... What did you say?”

“If I prove to you that you can, will you?”

“What kind of proof?”

“Let me give you a basic one. I tell you that you can raise ten gallons of water from the plain 18,000 feet below up to here, in liquid form from beginning to end, all in the matter of five days, without artificial aid of any kind.”

“Ten gallons of water? 18,000 feet? Without artificial aid of any kind? No buckets? No hoses? No pumps? No boilers? No condensers?”

“None, except the clothes you are now wearing, and the boots on your feet.”

“Impossible, even with buckets.”

“Thus, according to our definition, miraculous, considering its profound spiritual significance.”

“What spiritual significance?”

“First and foremost, that you are a miracle worker.”

“Circular reasoning.”

“Indeed. With no beginning and no end.”

“I can’t produce this proof for you, I’m sorry.”

“You already have.”

“I what?”

“You have already raised the water.”

“What water?”

“The water you’ve already raised up.”

“All ten gallons of it, I suppose.”

“And all in liquid form, as stipulated, minus your sweat, to be more exact.”

“And where is this water I have raised up without artificial aid of any kind?”

“Right where you are.”

He glanced around. “I see lots of ice, but it’s been here for eons, and certainly not due to me. Besides, it is in solid form. Liquid water? There is not a drop in sight, except the couple of pints still in my flask, and the flask is an artificial aid.”

“It’s here.”

“Well then, you’ll just have to show it to me.”

“Before I do, you must promise me one thing.”

“O Lord! What now?”

“The power of miracle is not to be abused.”

“Sure, no problem. If I do have this power, I will never abuse it. Okay?”

“Nor to be neglected.”

“Nor will I neglect it. Fine!”

“Then, look inward, inside your skin, where you will find, flowing through your arteries and veins, and liver and brain, ten gallons of warm, living water. You can baptize the world’s lost souls with it, and quench the world’s thirst for truth with it, and dissolve with it the despair of humankind. With this sacred water, you can change your world, even save your Earth.”

He thought for a moment, of his own accord, then said, "A trans-dimensional trick."

"Oh, is it? Let's see. Alright, how about something concrete, undeniable and indisputable. Here is a pile of charcoal, a pile of limestone, a tank of hydrogen, a tank of oxygen, a spoonful of salt, a little of other elements and compounds. Now, I want you to mix them up together in such a way that the entire mass of them can, say, rise up against gravity, or pull the trigger, as you will it. Wouldn't it be miraculous?"

"If I could make it, both the making and it would be miraculous."

"It can even write a book, you know."

Although it is mid-night, already, there is a certain dawning in his eyes. Without his being aware of it, as the moonlight filtered through the ice onto the blue steel of his gun, which had settled itself into his lap, on which glistened a drop of his liquid tears.

So, softly I said unto him, “Henceforth, I shall see through your eyes, hear through your ears, feel through your heart, think through your brain, and work through your hands, until your greater miracle is accomplished. May the Tao be with you, Homo Sapiens of Earth.”

I.T. - 1-01 - The 8 Critical Signs of Planet Earth

01 - Dear Homo Sapiens of Earth,

whose footprints now roam the craters of the Moon, beware.

Beware of the Eight Critical Cosmic Signs of Earth, all observable from the Moon. Collectively, they portend an imminent and monumental transformation to come unto your world, one leading to either planetary transcendence or global destruction. Behold, all seven of these Cosmic Signs have arisen.

The First Critical Sign: For millions of years, Earth’s night side has been invisibly dark, but now, suddenly, there is light, neon light.

The Second Critical Sign: For millions of years, Earth’s surface has been lush and green, but now, suddenly, there is deforestation.

The Third Critical Sign: For millions of years, Earth’s air has been clean and its water clear, but now, suddenly, there is pollution.

The Fourth Critical Sign: For millions of years, the ozone layer has shielded the Biosphere from harmful solar UV radiation, but now, suddenly, it is full of holes.

The Fifth Critical Sign: For millions of years, as a radio source the Earth has been silent, but now, suddenly, it is inundating it’s inter-planetary and interstellar neighborhood with its news, movies, documentaries, commentaries, soap operas, sitcoms, commercials… and televangelical sermons, which still preaches that you are the be all and end all of “Creation”.

The Sixth Critical Sign: Never in its 4.6 billion years has Earth generated a single thermal nuclear reaction, but now, suddenly, she is in danger of generating too many at once.

The Seventh Critical Sign: Earth was born of gravity, and by its own gravity its body parts have always been bound, but now, pieces of Earth – spacecraft, so called - are seen to suddenly fly away, some never to return.

The Eighth Critical Sign: Your footprints on the Moon.

And what do these Critical Cosmic Signs signify? Emergent planetary transcendence, or imminent global destruction. There is no third alternative.

Among Earth’s spacecraft are the Apollos, from whose #8 was broadcast a prayer as follows: “Give us, o God, the vision which can see thy love in the world in spite of human failure. Give us the faith, the trust, the goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness. Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts, and show us what each of us can do to set forth the coming of the day of universal peace. Amen.”

And the Pioneers 10 & 11, each carrying an identity plaque showing the position of Earth and the image of Homo Sapiens (which some humans call “the image of God”.)

And the Voyagers 1 & 2, each bearing an audio-visual recording of Earth sights and sounds, the latter including earthquake and thunder, bird and whale songs, human music and speech, the last being excerpted as follows:

From the President of the United States of America: “This is a present from a small distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our image, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we can live into yours. We hope some day, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in a vast and awesome Universe.”

May the future grant us the opportunity of meeting.” (in Spanish) / “Greetings from our friends amongst the stars. If you can cross the barrier between Earth and sky then do it. It is our desire to meet you.” (in Arabic) / “Welcome to our world.” (in Polish) / “How are you? We are thinking about you. Come visit us some time.” (in Chinese) / “We used to believe that the Universe was created for us humans on Earth alone, but we can no longer maintain this belief. We now think that you may exist to share this Universe with us, and have the power to help solve the many problems here in our world.” (in Efic) / “Please contact.” (in Gujurati)

From the Secretary General of the United Nations: “As the Secretary General of the United Nations, an organization of 147 member states who represent almost all of the human individuals of the planet Earth, I send greetings on behalf of the people of our planet. We step out of the Solar System seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of the immense Universe, and it is with humility and hope that we take this step.”

In short, three words: “Greeting”, “Welcome” and “Help!” And I, for one, hear them with joy and compassion. For the first, I salute you; for the second, I come to you, and for the third, I bear to you a gift of love, of hope, of truth and of peace.

INTRODUCTION

In 1979, Anthony Marr camped out solo in Africa for 2 months, "searching for himself". What he brought back to Canada was 2000 pages of hand-written notes, which, after a quarter century, was finally published in 2003 in the form of his 600-page magnum opus titled [OMNI-SCIENCE and the Human Destiny]. OMNI-SCIENCE is short for the OMNISCIENTIFIC COSMOLOGY, of which INTEGRATIVE TRANSCENDENCE is the central tenet.

In 1987, Anthony Marr gave a series of lectures at five west coast universities, including the University of British Columbia, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, the University of California @ Berkeley and Stanford University. Why we should NOT petition Facebook to ban videos showing animal cruelty

I see there are quite a few petitions going around asking Facebook to ban videos showing animal cruelty. I for one will NOT sign such petitions, for the following reasons:

1. Why should activists risk their freedom and their necks to obtain undercover videos of factory farms, slaughterhouses, dogfighting, vivisection labs, rodeos, circuses, just to have Facebook ban them from being shown to the public? Are we going to ask Facebook to ban [Meet Your Meat] and [Earthlings]? Are we going to ask Facebook to ban the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition from showing the hunting videos it has painstakingly accumulated over the years to reveal to the public the reality and cruelty of hunting? To illustrate that I mean what I say, here is a video documentation of a Great White Hunter and his African sell-outs killing an elephant with an arrow. You don't have to watch it, but don't ask Facebook to ban other people from seeing it.

2. Why does the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) forbid the taking of these videos in the first place? Because the animal enterprises, which control the government, do not want the public to see their cruelty, so that the public could sleep at night after a chicken dinner, and so that the factory farms and the vivisection labs and the hunting safaris could perpetrate their own brands of cruelty unhindered by any public conscience (except that of the ARAs of course).

3. America is much smarter than China in concealing its cruelty from the public eye. Thus, the prevalence of Chinese-bashing by American Activists and the absence of American-bashing by Chinese activists, and plus, the hundreds of boycott-China groups and zero boycott-America groups.

4. Sir Paul McCartney said, "If slaughterhouses have glass walls, we'd all be vegetarians." These videos render the walls transparent. Now why should we want to ban them, so that these walls remain opaque? Why would we want to censor ourselves?

There are other reasons, but these four should be sufficient.

Arctic A/C about to quit

Some have asked me what has been happening to the Arctic sea ice since the huge meltdown of 2007.

Well, the report is out:

My readers may recall my writing, back in 2008/2009, that due to the vast amount of Latent Heat of Fusion absorbed by the huge ice melt of 2007, the Arctic would be temporarily cooled for 2008 and likely also 2009, but that another big melt, one of the last, would probably occur in 2010 or 2011. As the graph above attests, it is exactly what has happened.

The sea ice is the substance of the Arctic Air Conditioner. When ice melts, it absorbs the Latent Heat of Fusion to the tune of 80 calories per gram of ice melted WITHOUT TEMPERATURE RISE. But once the sea ice has melted out some time over the next few years, the Arctic temperature will skyrocket. Unless we could somehow halt it.

Methane Time Bomb DETONATING before our very eyes

BREAKING NEWS - Hundreds of gigantic methane plumes, some over 1 kilometer / 0.6 miles wide - 10X larger than any seen before - have been observed bubbling to the sea surface in just a small sample area no larger than 10,000 sq.km (~ 22km x 22km x 22km / 13mi x 13 mi x 13 mi) in the Laptev Sea region off of Siberia.

............. The Eastern Arctic is on the bottom of the 2007 pic, where the sea ice has melted off, exposing dark ocean waters which absorbs solar heat and warms up faster than anywhere on Earth.

Russian research team astonished after finding 'fountains' of methane bubbling to surface

Dramatic and unprecedented plumes of methane – a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide – have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean by scientists undertaking an extensive survey of the region.

The scale and volume of the methane release has astonished the head of the Russian research team who has been surveying the seabed of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf off northern Russia for nearly 20 years.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Igor Semiletov, of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed.

"Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of metres in diameter. This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing," Dr Semiletov said. "I was most impressed by the sheer scale and high density of the plumes. Over a relatively small area we found more than 100, but over a wider area there should be thousands of them."

Scientists estimate that there are hundreds of millions of tonnes of methane gas locked away beneath the Arctic permafrost, which extends from the mainland into the seabed of the relatively shallow sea of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf. One of the greatest fears is that with the disappearance of the Arctic sea-ice in summer, and rapidly rising temperatures across the entire region, which are already melting the Siberian permafrost, the trapped methane could be suddenly released into the atmosphere leading to rapid and severe climate change.

Dr Semiletov's team published a study in 2010 estimating that the methane emissions from this region were about eight million tonnes a year, but the latest expedition suggests this is a significant underestimate of the phenomenon.

In late summer, the Russian research vessel Academician Lavrentiev conducted an extensive survey of about 10,000 square miles of sea off the East Siberian coast. Scientists deployed four highly sensitive instruments, both seismic and acoustic, to monitor the "fountains" or plumes of methane bubbles rising to the sea surface from beneath the seabed.

"In a very small area, less than 10,000 square miles, we have counted more than 100 fountains, or torch-like structures, bubbling through the water column and injected directly into the atmosphere from the seabed," Dr Semiletov said. "We carried out checks at about 115 stationary points and discovered methane fields of a fantastic scale – I think on a scale not seen before. Some plumes were a kilometre or more wide and the emissions went directly into the atmosphere – the concentration was a hundred times higher than normal."

Dr Semiletov released his findings for the first time last week at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

PEAK WATER is upon us!

With the tens of thousands of glaciers around the world all shrinking, some already melted out, many glacier-fed rivers are drying up, and with this, so will the irrigation-dependent agriculture around the world, bringing food shortages and famine.

The Himalayan glaciers, for example - all 20,000 of them - are melting. Together, they feed 8 rivers, including the Huang Ho (Yellow River - China), the Yangtze (China), the Mekong (Vietnam), the Indus (India) and the Ganges (India)..., providing water for upwards of 1.5 billion people today. Soon, it will be 2 billion and more. When, not if, these glaciers melt down and eventually melt out, where are these people to go? What are they to do? One thing they cannot do is to migrate, because there will be water shortages everywhere. So, there is no where they can go.

Some wonder if I'm turning from Animal Rights to Environmentalism. Of course not. In this time of planetary crisis, there is no meaningful line between the two. In fact, the worst of animal abuse comes from environmental abuse. Case in point, animals by the billions, wild and domestic, will die of thirst.

Some call me a "doomsday prophet". So be it. To heal our ailing planet, we need first to produce a diagnosis before advancing the cure.

The fastest growing trees - for Geo-Engineering

In my previous post on GEO-ENGINEERING, I pointed out that my top favorite GE technique is AFFORESTATION/REFORESTATION. Trees capture CO2 from the atmosphere and the carbon becomes part of the tree.

In the worst case scenario, when the tree dies, either it decays in the presence of exygen, or gets burned, in both cases the carbon being returned to the atmosphere in the form of CO2. But even so, there is no net positive in CO2 emission.

In better case scenarios, if the tree is used as lumber, the carbon would remain in the wood, and when the wood needs to be discarded, it could be buried where O2 is absent.

"United we stand, with our heads in the sand"

"Humanity hiding its head in the sand" means a moment's comfort at the expense of an eternity's pain, selling out the future for the present, sacrificing our children for ourselves.

The result of the climate talk this week - no action for present, no agreement except to reconvene in 4 years' time to discussion what can be done 4 more years down the road, is more than abysmal. It is criminal and suicidal. But for those with their heads in the sand, it is comforting, whereas factual reports on the true state of the planet, and the need to take action immediately or sooner, is seen as being depressing and shunned.

This is a matter of self-delusion resulting in the denial of the comfortably numb, whose conscience becomes unencumbered for yet another round of material orgy that has driven the world to the desperate state from which one resorts to hiding his head in the sand in the first place.

This is synonymous to someone having cancer that needs immediate treatment feeling comforted by some corrupt doctor telling him/her that there is no urgency in the matter. "If you are scared of the operation, or can't afford to pay for it, we'll schedule it for the year 2020, no problem."

Now THIS is depressing.

GEO-ENGINEERING - Earth's Last Resort

We've done it. At this time of unprecedented urgency, we've decided to wait.

After Bush "waited" eight years, and Obama four, we've globally voted to wait some more - not another one year, not two, not three, but four, and then, sure, we'll talk again. We're now down to our last card, and if it's a losing card, we'd be toast. And the way we've been playing our previous cards, it looks like we're probably not going to make it.

But, hey, "It ain't over till it's over", right?

The previous lost cards have led to our current desperate predicament, which is not viable, tenable, feasible, nor sustainable. We are walking into a deadend, where our children will have no future.

1. In the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (1880 AD), the atmospheric carbon concentration was 280 ppm, which was about the maximum the Earth had experienced for the last half million years. 350 ppm is the maximum sustainable, beyond which Runaway Global Warming will begin to take hold. We are now at 390 ppm, rising at about 1 ppm per year, and escalating. The Oil-controlled nations are now talking about an incredible 450 ppm - a suicide scenario.

2. Even supposing no more than 390 ppm, The temperature rise will far exceed the projected 2.0C/3.2F ceiling for this century which, even so, James Hansen opines to be already a formula for disaster. By the look of things, we'll exceed the 2C threshold not in 2100, but likely 2030.

3. As recently as 2006, scientists had thought that the Arctic summer would be ice free by 2100. Now, it has been moved up to some time this decade, right in our face. We have driven the Arctic past its tipping point, meaning that the Albedo Feedback Loop has taken hold, where less ice means more dark ocean water exposed to absorb solar heat, and the faster the remaining ice will melt. The end will be sudden, and its heating effects abrupt.

4. Because the melting ice cap absorbs the Latent Heat of Fusion to the tune of 80 calories per gram of ice melted without any rise in temperature, the melting ice temporarily cools the Arctic. But once the ice is gone, the Arctic summer temperature will skyrocket.

5. With the Arctic temperature skyrocketing, the methane trapped in and under the permafrost on the land surrounding the Arctic Ocean, especially Siberia, and the solid methane hydrate deposits on the undersea continental shelf, will be release into the atmosphere. Even now, at only +0.8C, the permafrost is already melting fast. Methane has been observed being released on land and from the sea in copious quantities. When this happens, the second Arctic Feedback Loop has been started, where the more methane released, the warmer the air will become, the faster the permafrost will melt, and the faster more methane will be released. There are billions of tons of methane waiting to be released in the Arctic alone. If the methane feedback loop goes out of control, the planet will become an oven.

We are now within several years of the Methane Time Bomb detonating, while stupidly burning oil and coal faster than ever before.

Even if we stopped burning yesterday, the CO2 already in the atmosphere will keep om heating the planet for centuries to come, and the M-Bomb will detonate sooner or later. It's just that we are behaving in such a way to make it detonate as soon as possible.

Good thing we're not completely done for. We still have one last card to play. It is not a "bonus" card. It is a card that we will have to play one way or another. As I have pointed out, 350 ppm is the ceiling of sustainability, and we have to lower the atmospheric carbon concentration back down to this level before our children can have a stable world to live in, and the longer we wait, the higher will be the current ppm, and the harder it will be to bring it down to 350.

What I am saying is that we should play this card ASAP, now, when it is 390 ppm, rather than in 2020, at over 400 ppm. Plus, when it comes to 400 ppm, there is no guarantee that the M-Bomb has not detonated. Once it has detonated, the bet is off.

I know what this card is. It is called Geo-Engineering (GE).

Many environmental groups are against it, saying it will slacken the drive to cut down on carbon emissions. I can see this, but, since I've said, we cannot avoid doing Geo-Engineering if we want to stabilize the planet. To reduce the ppm from 390 to 350 needs to be done, and it is Geo-Engineering.

It should be realized is that we have to do BOTH, SIMULTANEOUSLY, and there is no better time than now.

And we should not be over-confident about the strength of this our last card, and should play it with great deliberation. If you see what we've got on this card, you wouldn't be celebrating too soon.

There are two main classes of Geo-Engineering: Solar Radiation Management (SRM) and Carbon Removal (CR)

A. Solar Radiation Management

A1. Desert Surface and Arctic Ocean Albedo - This means to cover the desert surface with a highly reflective material that can scatter solar heat back out to space. This might indeed cool the planet down somewhat, but it is just a stop-gap measure. It cannot lower the C-ppm by one iota, nor can it decrease ocean acidification. Also, if we want to go as far as to cover the desert with something, I would much rather have it be solar panels than aluminium foil. Arctic Ocean Albedo means to cover the ice-free part of the Arctic Ocean with white plastic. Again, this might keep the Arctic cooler, but it won't lower the C-ppm, nor ocean acidification, and I would much rather save what remains of the Arctic sea ice as well as the land glaciers from melting off while we still have them.

A2. Solar Radiation filtration - by a range of means from sulphur aerosol to millions of reflective balloons to billions of orbiting space mirrors. Again, these may screen off enough solar radiation to give Earth a break, but at the same time, it is impacting negatively on the solar panels on the surface of the planet. And neither can it reduce the C-ppm nor address ocean acidification.

B. Carbon Removal:

B1. Ocean fertilization, mainly with iron or urea towards encouraging phytoplankton growth which will absorb Ocean carbon, which in turn will reduce ocean acidification.

B2. Atmospheric Carbon Capture, by afforestation, reforestation and "chemical trees".

In all of Geo-Engineering, there is not a single guarantee of success anywhere, but without it we will fail for sure.

Of all Geo-Engineering I favor Afforestation and Reforestation most, but first STOP DEFORESTATION already!

Standard of Living vs Quality of Life

With 9% unemployment (25 million) and 16% unemployment/underemployment, real estate worth plummeting by 1/3 and falling, suburbs become enclaves of the poor and dispossessed, permanent psychological damage after 6 months of job-search failures, a destitute nation with a $800 billion military budget... experts are now beginning to debate whether to call the current Recession a downright DEPRESSION.

One thing they agree on is that the American STANDARD OF LIVING will be lowered, likely for good - the beginning of the end of materialist orgies for the masses, e.g. Xmas-madness. This is the way it should be, and will have to be, since an over-high standard of living, i.e. living beyond ones means, both personally and nationally, is one of the prime reasons for the recession/depression in the first place.

One ignoble thing is that this necessary lowering of living standard by and large is and will be involuntary. So much the nobler is to lower it on ones own accord before one is forced to do so.

Since I became a full-time non-profit ARA, my Standard of Living has been sharply curtailed (down to about $1200/month), but my QUALITY OF LIFE has been immeasurably elevated.

No, the Standard of Living and the Quality of Life are not related, much less the same. "The best things in life are free", and we are all born with them within ourselves.

Heal Our Planet Earth (HOPE) of her 6 Planetary Diseases

For millions of years, the night side of Earth had been invisibly dark, until Man said, "Let there be light!" And there is light. Thus has arisen the First Critical Symptom of Earth's Six Planetary Diseases.

"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." - Krishnamurti

And all the worse if that profoundly sick society is situated in a profoundly sick world.

This is a little too figurative? No problem. I'll make it literal. The Earth, yes, the planet, is profoundly sick.

And let me be specific. The planet Earth is afflicted by not one, not two, not three, but six Planetary Diseases, any one of which, if it happened to you, could kill you. The Earth have all six, and not only are you living on it, you are an integral part of it.

Speaking again figuratively, these 6 planetary diseases can be analogized to the deadliest six human diseases, namely:

1. PLANETARY CANCER -

Cancer is an internal threat. It is rogue cells in the body, of the body, multiplying unchecked, consuming the body from within, until it dies. Thus, ultimately, the cancer destroys itself. In terms of the planetary diseases, the "rogue cells" are biological entities that call themselves "Humans", which belong to the rogue species that calls itself Homo Sapiens, meaning "Man the Wise". Man-the-Wise evolved into being from the Biosphere in the very recent geological past, and has remained an integral part of the Biosphere ever since. Originally, it lived in harmony with all fellow life forms, but somewhere along the line, it underwent a dual internal mutation, a religious one and a technological one, which caused it to multiply unchecked and enabled it to exploit the planet with unprecedented efficiency. It is a dual exponential trajectory which, if allowed to run its course, would devastate the Biosphere, and Man-the-Wise along with it. There is only one possible saving grace for Man-the-Wise as opposed to cellular cancer, and that is Free Will. To be or not to be - a cancer - that is the question.

2. PLANETARY AIDS

The Stratospheric Ozone Layer is the planet's Auto-Immune-System. It protects the Biosphere from the damaging UV radiation from the sun, which could cause anything from melanoma to blindness (imagine blind lions and blind eagles) to genetic mutations to wholesale die-off of plants. If the ozone layer is stripped from the Earth, the Biosphere would by and large be sterilized, except in caves and oceanic depths. In recent decades, out of millions of years, a hole in the ozone layer has opened up in the Antarctic, and one has opened up in recent years in the Arctic. Though banned from the aerosol can, the CFCs already in the atmosphere is still doing their destructive magic.

3. PLANETARY CONSUMPTION

"Consumption" in medical terms is akin to wasting disease. In planetary terms it refers to loss of habitat, biomass and biodiversity, due mostly to deforestation, desertification, overfishing, overhunting and climate change, the convergent result being Mass Extinction.

4. PLANETARY FEVER

This refers of course to global warming. Global warming is necessary for life. Without global warming the Earth would be as cold as the dark side of the moon at night. It is the sudden increase in warming that could decimate the Biosphere. The human body needs warmth to be alive, thus the 98.6F. It is the sudden rise to 108F that will kill you. Biological evolution and adaptation are slow. If the warming is fast, species could have nowhere to go but extinct.

5. PLANETARY SELF-POISONING

This includes anthropogenic pollution of all kinds, from CO2 to CH4 to CFCs to heavy metals to dioxins and furans. In the atmosphere are thousands upon thousands of new chemical compounds never seen in Earth's history, some of which, of course, are poisonous to life. Note that the poisons did not rain down from space, nor dumped here by aliens; they are all created, intentionally or as by-products, by humans. Most of these chemicals are poisonous to humans.

6. PLANETARY SUICIDE

If during the Cold War the US and the USSR committed Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) by total nuke exchange, thereby wiping out life on Earth, it would look like the US vs the USSR only to humans. To extra-terrrestrials, it would be the Earth killing herself. Man-made global warming likewise, just a slightly slower death.

This is a video of 2 archers, one Russian, one American, contending for the World Cup. Consider 10 as the kill zone (heart & lung) and 9, 8, 7 as wounding zones (gut, back, shoulder, rump, head, legs), and you will see that even these Olympic-class archers, under ideal conditions, score 10s only part of the time. And there is no foliage in between, and the targets don't move. This attests to bow hunting's dismal and cruel non-lethal wounding rate of 50%. Seen an arrow-wounded deer lately?

To give you a more life-like demonstration, shown here is a target for a "3D Archery" tournament. The red circle encloses the quick-death zone where the heart and lung are located. The shots landing outside of the circle would cause the victim to die slow, lingering and agonizing deaths, or to stagger around with an arrow imbedded somewhere in their bodies for the rest of their lives.

And the bow-hunters know it.
