The Stairway to Freedom

The Stairway to Freedom

Anthony Marr

One who dwells in the bottom of a well
will say that the sky is small.
Another may even insist to tell
that there is no sky at all
but a hole in The World's ceiling overhead
through which the light from Heaven is shed.

Of a great dried well was indeed what I dreamed
on whose bottom I was born and raised it seemed.
So dried this world of a well had become
Two hundred ponds were all that remained in sum,
each claimed and owned by one walled estate
who regarded its neighbors with jealousy and hate.

The wall of the well was high as the sky,
surrounding the World Village an unbroken cliff,
to try scaling which many have died falling,
and some by leaping, all understood why
who have sought an escape, no "but" nor "if",
as they heard again their freedom's calling.

For though of mansions our well-world was full,
and magnificent they could all be deemed,
yet the barbed-wire spoke of peace unachieved,
and feuds amongst families raged bloody and cruel.
To their gods they prayed, of palaces they dreamed,
but few for what vision had yet to be conceived.

Our world, sadly, was not brimming with wealth.
Fuel and building materials were in short supply.
Sooner or later we would surely kill
for the last wheelbarrow of coal, by force or stealth.
Afterward, they say, "I'll suffer their orphans' cry."
Meanwhile, there's no doubt if they won't or will.

Still the root cause of this predicament persisted –
to out-luxuriate the Smiths and Joneses bar none.
A few spoke of consequences but none had resisted
this tradition passed on from father to son.
To honor this cause entire generations had insisted,
a purpose upheld, if not fulfilled, by everyone.

It was certainly not fulfilled, if still upheld, by me.
Examine my purchasing record, and you'd agree.
My estate was still in grandeur, but grandeur in decline.
About the only thing new was in this garden of mine –
a giant question mark, paved in stone. But then,
what eyes could see it except those in Heaven?

Besides, what eyes in this world would even care?
It came as no surprise, therefore,
when Raminothna descended into this world-at-war,
the landing was made here and not over there.
She told me about the boundless universe beyond
this miserable little world of which I was not fond.

And I was told of the myriad living things
inhabiting those wondrous realms above,
and of the spiritual freedom that knowledge brings,
and universal truth, and peace, and love.
Like a caged tiger I began to pace
within my confining, confounding space.

Finally, I confronted Raminothna, saying,
"What are you here for?" And her reply:
"To bring you deliverance. To set you free."
But her discarded wings I could plainly see.
In ill-concealed skepticism I continued to pry:
"And how do you plan to accomplish that? By staying?"

"By persuading you to build a stairway, my love,
one leading to the domains above."
"What with? Do you realize what that would demand?
And that supplies are stockpiled, but none by me?"
"I see building materials right at hand,"
said Raminothna, "and supplies aplenty."

Following her illuminating eyes I was shocked to see
they're fixed on this mansion of mine. I replied in dismay,
"I would gladly take my house apart, stone by stone,
and transform it into a stairway to freedom, on my own,
if I knew that the last stone would set me free.
But plainly, it wouldn't take me a hundredth of the way."

"Then let it be the foundation of your stairway to Heaven."
"After that, what then? I have nothing else, not even a dime."
"I see more than enough, considering all your brethren."
Following Raminothna's eyes again, I saw this time
they were sweeping the mansions all around, stone and gem.
"I see. And how do you propose to persuade them?"

Thereupon, Raminothna's penetrating gaze
moved to fix itself upon my face.
So shocked was I the dream ejected me
but then, in the dawn light I see
in the mirror misted in the morning chill
that her gaze is fixed upon mine eyes still.

The City of Illusion

I had a dream, a disillusioning dream.

I was walking on a great plain towards a towering volcano. When I arrived at the foothills, I found the ruins of a square-shaped city, cast in stone. At the gate was a stake, charred black. On the walls of the houses were carvings in a language that I could understand. E.g.:

“The Earth is 6000 years old. Life was created in the beginning in 6 days, and is forever immutable.”

“Man has dominion over the Earth, and may use and abuse and kill other creatures at will, which have no rights.”

“Global warming, whenever proclaimed, will be false.”

“Thou shalt not ascend the Mountain of Forbidden Knowledge. The penalty is death.”

I hesitated for 3 days before climbing the volcano. From the summit, the city looked like an open page on a table, with each house a word, each block a sentence, and the whole city the message:

“The Earth is 4.6 billion years old. Life created itself over million of years, and evolves through the eons. The human species is a new comer, and must exercise respect, humility and compassion for all other beings. Eventually, humanity must pass the test of global warming, or die, bringing millions of species down with it. Its ultimate responsibility is to safe-guard the Earth from external threats, and be a true steward of the planet.”

Sorry, this video did not work the last time.

Nietzsche asks: "What is the heaviest thing?" Here's Anthony Marr's answer

Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche muses: "What is the heaviest thing in the world? that I may take it upon me and rejoice in my strength!"

Anthony Marr offers a literal answer to the metaphorical question: "When you have the full weight of this heaviest thing in the palm of your hands, your feet will simultaneous rise 6' off the ground, bearing no weight at all."

Impossible? Do a handstand, if you can.

The heaviest thing in the world is the planet Earth.

What does it mean to take the weight of the Earth upon yourself? The following video will explain.

Target Japan's Achilles' heel to halt whaling and dolphining

Chronicle, November 11, 2004 - Chinese American writer Iris Chang was found dead of a gun shot wound in South Bay...

May Chin condemns Japanese war crimes against the natives of Taiwan..

Is this a part of the legendary samurai's code?

Japanese torture of American POWs is world known, including a case where a pencil was slowly pushed into one ear and out the other, but Japanese atrocities in China is all but buried.

And I, of Chinese extraction, see it as my duty to take over where Iris Chang left off. No, not for revenge, but to halt the ongoing atrocity.

For though Japan no longer massacres other nation's civilians, its blood-lust and cruelty has not ceased.

It has only been transfer to other sentient victims.

Japan's damnable war crimes in China is its Achilles' heel. Japan is doing whatever it can to conceal its bloody history from its younger generations, and the younger generations worldwide. Oh no, you can't!

I am warning you, Japan: Until the day you announce the termination of your whaling and dolphin capture/slaughter industries, we will continue sending out similar and worse pictures of your war crimes, which most of the world has never seen. We will do this for as long as it takes. There are thousands more in our archive.

In honor of my beloved mother, who was almost captured as a "comfort woman", to be raped, tortured and killed.

To Hypatia the Great

Having paid my respects to Giordano Bruno, I must now bow to the great Hypatia. Born in 370 CE, as a pagan, she became the First Woman of science, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and athletics. In short, she was a Renaissance Woman more than a millennium ahead of the Renaissance itself. And like those ahead of their time, she was frowned upon by the old guards, the worst being the Christian Bishop Cyril,

and jeered by the retarded among the young turks, though among them she also found her disciples.

She had many loves, but never married, her devotion being to intellectual inquiry and the dissemination of truth based on reason; she was outspoken to a fault in an anti-intellectual society which, when she was 21, much to her devastation, burned the great Alexandria Library to the ground.

And then, in 415, she was pulled from her chariot by the mob led by Cyril,

and dragged into a church,

where she was stripped naked,

and flayed alive with abalone shells and pottery shards, until her flesh hung in tethers from exposed bones, and her still quivering and blood soaked remains thrown to the flames.

Ask 100 people in the street about Giordano Bruno and Hypatia, and 99 would not know who they were, when in truth, theirs were the greatest stories fate had ever told. Not only did the authorities burn him alive and cut her to pieces, they had buried their courageous life stories in their vault of shame. My hope is that my words will do their small parts to resurrect these brave souls, named and unnamed, back into immortality. Amen.
