2010-09-17 - Anthony Marr's CARE-7 tour blog #28 - PA, OH

In this my 40-states-in-7-months Compassion for Animals Road Expedition #7 (CARE-7), I've been on the road for 5.5 months (since April 1, 2010), but it doesn't mean that things have slowed down. In fact, the last week was the busiest ever - with 7 events in 8 days, plus 4 10-hour drives and 2 shorter ones in between.

My schedule was as follows:

Sept 5, Sunday – Swarthmore College, Swarthmore PA - meeting with local activists,

Sept 6, Monday – Swarthmore College, meeting with ecology professor in the afternoon, and delivering a speech in the evening,

Sept 7, Tuesday – Columbus OH – lecture at the Grandview Heights Public Library, hosted by Corey Roscoe, Mercy for Animals,

Sept 8, Wednesday – Cleveland OH – lecture at the Beachwood Library, hosted by Jennifer Kaden, Cleveland Animal Rights Alliance,

Sept 9, Thursday – Cleveland OH – lecture at the Pilgrim Congregation Church, hosted by Dr. Steve Kaufman, the Christian Vegetarian Society,

Sept 11, Saturday – Troy (near Dayton) OH – lecture hosted by Myshell Haller at the AHOWAN Spiritual Sanctuary,

Sept 12, Sunday – Cincinnati OH – lecture at Devou Park, hosted by Mary Ann Lederer, Earthsave & the new group Vegan Earth.

In the mid-morning of September 3, Friday, I bade Ted and Carol farewell, and drove 7 hours from Rochester NY to Swarthmore PA. When approaching the campus of Swarthmore College, I called my host Ethan Bogdan, a sophomore in environmental studies, who, lacking the exact address of his dormitory, waited for me at the intersection of Harvard and Yale, and pointed out to me the tree-shaded parking lot where my Green Hornet was to stay until Tuesday morning before leaving for Columbus, Ohio. As if to prove the adage that “nothing ever works exactly according to plan”, however, she had to stay in Swarthmore until Friday.

Since blowing the front left tire at high speed on July 19 from Pittsburgh PA to New Jersey, I've felt a little abnormality in her steering. Since the time of my arrival in Swarthmore was about 4:30pm, I took her to an auto service place near campus for a check up. The mechanics put her up on a hoist, and found that her lower control arm bushing had come loose, and advised me in no uncertain terms that to drive her at high speed was to court disaster, where her front wheel could suddenly seize up, causing me to lose control of the car as well as wrecking the transmission. Unfortunately, it was closing time, and the beginning of the Labor Day long weekend, and nothing could be done until Tuesday. They did point my way to the local branch of the Pep Boys chain, which stayed open throughout the weekend. There they told me that, yes, they would stay open, but since the parts department of the Mazda dealers would be closed, again, nothing could be done until Tuesday soonest. The problem was that my next engagement was at 6:30 pm on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, a good 10 hours' drive from Swarthmore, and there was no way I could get the Green Hornet fixed before driving and making the event on time.

My initial thought was to cancel the engagement, but upon further deliberation, considering the work that Corey Roscoe had put into organizing the event, I decided to drop the Green Hornet off to Pep Boys at 7:30am on Tuesday, take a taxi to the Philadelphia airport 20 minutes away to get a rental car, from where I would drive to Columbus, aiming to arrive by about 5pm. Immediately after the event, I would drive 2 hours to Cleveland for the night, do the two events there, then right after the second Cleveland event on Thursday evening, drive 9 hours overnight back to the Philadelphia airport to drop off the rental car by 8am Friday morning, take a taxi back to Pep Boys to pick up the Green Hornet, catch a nap or two at Ethan's dorm room at Swarthmore, then drive 11 hours to Dayton OH the following day for the lecture in Troy, followed by a 2 hours drive to Cincinnati same evening for the next day's lecture, then relax after the strenuous week. So the plan went, and this time it did unfold exactly as planned.

Feedback from Myshell Haller: "Anthony, thank you so much for your visit to Troy Ohio and the speech you gave. I especially like and received a lot of comments on the more positive view of what we can do on an individual level in order to help bring about a shift in the overall "doom & gloom". Thank you for educating us that we as pieces of the Whole are on the right track toward the Greater Shift into the Golden Age. My only regret was that you were unable to stay longer and experience the incredible drumming circle. We got a lot of positive energy moving. Again, you are priceless to the Mission and the strength of your will is definitely The Source moving through you. Humanity is grateful for your drive, courage, and perseverance. Namaste."

Whew!!... It is so gratifying to see it all come together!! I have had such a wonderful time working with each and every host..Mary Ann, in particular, is such a sweetheart. She was really thrown off by the slanderous and untruthful email she received. I was happy to explain the truth to her and support her in putting together an event to benefit both mankind and the animals. Anthony, it has been my honor to help organize this tour. All of it, as you know, was for the Earth and her inhabitants, and I pray that we made a difference. By the looks of your photos...we did! YOU did! And more events still to come. Although my scheduling and coordinating has come to an end, I am looking forward to seeing your blogs on Chicago and Salt Lake City...let's finish up with a bang!! Thank you SO MUCH for all your hard work!!!...The dedication you show in renting a car and making sure you made it to events, even though you had to leave your car behind and drive all night, is just such clear evidence of your total commitment and dedication. Anthony, I am truly honored to have been able to help on this tour. Here's to SLC and Chicago...and then on to LA!!

with love,
Catherine
