Up to 80 mpg; 0-60 mph in 7 secs, range 350mi/600km
In this day and age verging on ecological and economic collapse, and you want an inexpensive, fuel efficient yet *exciting* vehicle (dream on?), I have one to recommend - the Ninja 250 (see Shannon Wright's red bike in the pic).
For history, details and specs, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_Ninja_250R
And it has the unique advantage of being widely acknowledged as the ideal starter bike around, so people who can't currently ride can learn to ride on it as well.
The idea of learning to ride a motorcycle may seem daunting, but I do not know a single person who has acquired the skill who does not love it.
Its extra merits include
1. You can get a good used one for less than $1000.
2. It is proven reliable and durable, being the best selling light sportbike since the 1980s.
3. It has a top speed of up to 100 mph / 160 kph, and can stay on it all day.
4. It has a highway range of some 375 miles / ~600 km on a 4.8-gallon-tank of gas - extremely advantages during fuel shortages.
5. I know a women who has criss-crossed the continent several times on hers.
6. Due to its lasting popularity, parts are plentiful, cheap and easy to find.
7. In a bartering situation, it can buy you a lot of food.
8. It is race-bred, so very athletic, nimble and capable, so it normal circumstances, even expert riders cannot out-ride its capability. Plus, subjectively speaking, it is great fun to ride.
As the following video attests, when raced against bigger bikes (e.g. my blue CBR 600 in the pic), the 600s and 1000s would zip right past it on the straight, but it could overtake them on the curves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=Kz03sQeX02c&feature=endscreen
So, to newbies: Get one, and you won't be tired of it for years, while flying by gas stations with peace of mind.
Note: There are electric motorcycles (I don't mean scooters) out there, but currently, they are pricey, near impossible to find used, and have only limited ranges. Plus, when most of the electricity is generated by coal at this point, riding either bike makes little ecological difference.
