Best All-Around Activist 2010:

Anthony Marr

Whether protecting tiger reserves in India, risking his life in undercover investigations of the illegal trade in endangered species parts; challenging any and all forms of hunting; hosting a radio show; writing visionary books on science, philosophy, and cosmology; embarking on marathon coast-to-coast Compassion for Animals Road Expeditions covering dozens of US states (launching his seventh tour in March 2010), or mobilizing scientific research to awaken the complacent to the immanent dangers of irreversible ecological crisis, Anthony Marr is raising awareness, effectively campaigning, and blazing new trails. In 2009, with several other activists, Marr launched the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition, one that 'can bring the weight of the entire world to bear on the local governments bullying the grassroots Activists.'[5] For anyone skeptical of what one person can do alone or in strategic alliance with others, or what can be accomplished without the large bankrolls such as HSUS commands (and squanders), look no further. For Marr shows what great things can blossom from intelligence, independence, courage, and unqualified commitment to the rights of nature, free from the predatory violence of Homo sapiens. The story Marr tells, and the outcome for which he fights, is not a zero-sum tragedy that pits one element of nature against another, however, but achieves a harmonization of life forces. 'If we win,' Marr says, 'we will have elevated the quality of Humanity, and brought about a major quantum leap in human social evolution.'

Anthony Marr's mini-bio:

Anthony Marr has a science degree (physics) and is the author of "Omni-Science and the Human Destiny" (2003) and “Homo Sapiens! SAVE YOUR EARTH” (2008). A full-time wildlife preservationist and anti-hunting activist since 1995, he has cleaned up North American Chinatowns of traditional medicines containing endangered species ingredients, been to India 3 times for the Bengal tiger, to Japan twice for the whales and dolphins, fought high profile battles against recreational trophy hunting in N. America and the horrendous seal massacre in Canada, founded the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition (GAHC), as well as conducted 6 Compassion for Animals Road Expeditions (CARE tours) each covering 25-44 U.S. states over 3-7 months. He founded Heal Our Planet Earth (HOPE) in 1999 and is the leader of HOPE’s Global Emergency Operation (GEO) on climate change and mass extinction. He has been a key speak at the Animal Right National Conference since 2004. He is currently on his 7th Compassion for Animals Road expedition, which will take him and GAHC VP Anthony Damiano through 39 states in 7 months.

Anthony Marr's CARE-7 tour blog #10

Southern California

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Anthony Damiano, Cathy Garneau, Marla Stormwolf-Patty, Paul Fusch, Coby and Eleanore Siegenthaler, Christine Miller, Michelle Mars and myself, the Los Angeles funeral motorcade, in one word, was TERRRRIFIC!

Photobucket

Paul came in to Coby's place around 10 am, Marla and Joe came in around 10:45, and we hit the road at 11:30 in/on five vehicles - Anthony D in my car, Paul in his, Marla and Joe in Joe's, Coby and Noor in Noor's, plus I on my motorcycle. I followed Paul's "Penguin SUV" from Northridge to Hollywood. On the freeway, he drove at 80 mph and, having been cut off by a few cars, I had to ride at 90 mph to catch back up to him. :)

Photobucket

We arrived at the assembly point in Hollywood by noon, and Cathy arrived shortly there after, as did CJ.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Meanwhile Michelle Mars brought in 4 cars, plus a couple of young people whom we met at the Animal Liberation Forum last week, including Monika Troshelova, all in all adding up to a dozen cars plus my bike.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The assembly point that we had chosen, being a busy street intersection, was far from ideal, but we made do by parking at the red-zones and staying with the vehicles while decorating them.

Photobucket

Photobucket

A TV cameraman from Channel 5 arrived before 1 pm, whose footage would go to 3 other channels, so, in essence, we were covered by 4 TV stations.

Photobucket

After walking around filming participants decorating their cars, the TV cameraman finally zoomed in on me astride my bike for a few soundbites.

Photobucket

TV: Please state you name, your organization(s) and position(s) in it/them.

AM: I'm Anthony Marr, the founder and president of the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition (GAHC) and Heal Our planet Earth (HOPE).

TV: Tell me what your organizations are about.

AM: Because a local anti-hunting group almost always lose when pitted against a local government which is almost always prohunting, we need a coalition of anti-hunting groups to win. Thus the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition. Heal Our Planet Earth is about saving million of species from extinction due to the imminent Runaway Global Heating.

TV: What are you doing here today?

AM: I am currently conducting the 40-states-in-7-months Compassion for Animals Road Expedition #7 (CARE-7) with GAHC VP Anthony Damiano, which will include about 40 Funeral Motorcades for the Animals. This one today is one of the funeral motorcades. Just as we would a friend or a loved one who have died, or been killed, we dedicate this funeral motorcade to our non-human friends who have died at human hands, and whom we love.

TV: What kinds of animals?

AM: All animals, wild and domestic. The activists here in this motorcade each have their own favorites. Some for cows, pigs and chickens, some for cats and dogs, and others against crush videos - where women literally crush cats and dogs to death with their bare feet or high heel shoes, and men use machinery to crush horses alive - for the entertainment of perverts. I specialize in hunting issues, and do it for the hunted animals, and against all forms of commercial, recreational and trophy hunting.

TV: What are the latest news?

AM: The latest news came only three days ago, when the Supreme Court struck down a standing law banning videos showing cruelty against animals, on the laughable ground of protecting free speech. The law used to ban videos of animal abuse of all types for commercial purposes. To protect their own hunting videos, the hunters despicably lobby for the legalization of the dog-fighting and crush videos, and have succeeded. Resulting from this supreme court action, things are wide open now, and all are legal, and the internet is suddenly flooded with crush and dog-fighting videos, and of course hunting videos. But now, given that Congress is tabling a new bill to ban certain types of animal cruelty videos, the hunting community and NRA are now lobbying for banning crush videos only, with hunting videos exempted specifically. To defeat this will be one of GAHC's missions.

TV: Could you give us a link?

AM: Since crush videos are the least known, I will give you this link: www.stopcrush.org.

TV: Thank you.

Photobucket

After the interview, the TV cameraman parked his cam down the road and asked us to parade past him when ready. We did, with my motorcycle in the lead.

Photobucket

After the cameraman has left, Michelle "Micky" Mars led us to the parking lot of a nearby city park, where we did our own video recording with my motorcycle leading the line of cars around the parking lot three times. And after this, we drove a circuit in Hollywood twice, which we also video recorded.

Photobucket

Unfortunately, I left the cam with the person doing the video-recording, so the footage will not be available in time for the publishing of this blog.

Photobucket

The GAHC group headed back to Coby's place and spent the time together until it broke around 11 pm. All in all a very satisfying day.

2010-04-24 - Anthony Marr's CARE-7 tour blog #9 - with Tigers Forever video

2010-04-24

Anthony Marr's CARE-7 tour blog #9

S. California

April 22, Thursday, Earth Day. I'd been invited to speak at the UCLA demo against vivisection. Unfortunately, I committed my car to Coby for the afternoon, so, I celebrated Earth Day on my own, which was in fact more in line with my philosophy - that everyday is Earth Day, based on which I've been working for the planet 365 day a year, every year of my life since 1995.

April 23, Friday, my day to go to San Diego for a dinner speech at the Evolution restaurant organized by Kevin Marks of the San Diego Vegetarian meet-up group. Anthony D remained at Coby's to hold the fort and to organize the Sunday, 25th funeral motorcade slated for Newport Beach, with Cathy Garneau contacting media by phone and email.

By my GPS, the driving time was 2.5 hours. Since my arrival time was supposed to be 6 pm, I left at 2 pm from Coby's place in Northridge, thinking that htere would be time to spare, the GPS indicating that the ETA was about 4:30 pm. But once on I-405, I got stuck in stop-and-go traffic, which at times was stop-and-stop, with no end in sight.

Photobucket

As I inched along, the GPS-ETA got later and later: 5:00, then 5:30, then 6:00. By the time it showed 6:30, I was still in the LA complex, near Irvine, and I began to think about turning back, and called Anthony D to this effect. However, even if I wanted to turn back, I wouldn't have been able to, since I was simply stuck. So, finally, after I had inched past Irvine, the traffic did ease up, but by then, the ETA had moved down to 6:45. As of that point, whenever I could lead-foot it, I did, and finally arrived at the Evolution Restaurant in San Diego at 6:35.

There were about 10 people there, to whom I gave a two-part talk on hunting and Runaway Global Heating. Again, their eyebrows went up and their jaws dropped down on both counts, as is the general reaction of audiences thus far. Again, I know that within an hour, I have changed their lives forever.

Photobucket

While packing up to leave, a couple sitting nearby asked me what my talk was about, and I gave them a 5 minute summary of the Runaway Global Heating, and believe that I have changed another two lives.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

I decided to drive back to Northridge by night to prevent the same long-parking-lot experience on I-405 by day, aiming for arrival by 11:30 pm, and this time the deadline was met. But less than half way through, while still 100 miles from LA city center, I saw the Newport Beach sign, and knew instantly that a funeral motorcade there wouldn't go where LA media were concerned. So I changed Newport Beach to Hollywood-Burbank in my mind, and informed Anthony D of it by phone, who then informed Cathy Garneau.

This morning, Cathy spent hours on the phone calling TV stations and newspapers, and produced notable results in generating media interest, including the L.A. Times, and channels 2, 4, 7 and others. Let's see how many will show up. Michelle Mars called and said that she would bring herself and maybe two more cars. She also sent me an email mentioning "engagement ring" LOL.

Tia also has finished the 2-part video "Tiger's Forever - on Anthony Marr's work in India", and I shared it in MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.

As of the mid-afternoon, Marla, Cathy and Paul came for a work session. All laptops were out.

Photobucket

Cathy came with a stack of print-outs of hunting photos with hunters crouching beside their victims, including half a dozen elephants, several male lions, and even a highly endangered white rhino! Unbelievable, but true.

Photobucket

I know for a fact that there are at least six African countries in which the hunting of the "Big Five" (elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard) are still legal, where a lion hunt fetches upwards of $20,000 and an elephant hunt up to $60,000.

Photobucket

It was not all work and no play either. Coby cooked us a fantastic vegan dinner, and we had fun in the kitchen while helping coby out, and helping ourselves to the healthy and delicious fare. Whenever we get together, there are always plenty of hugs to go around. This being the 4th Saturday of the month it was Coby's regular potluck, and a few people came in, include CJ from Colorado, who exchanged local info about Kristal, Cheyenne and Anne. He said he would come and join the motorcade.

Photobucket

The work/play party broke up around 11 pm, and we all plan to meet tomorrow at noon at the entrance of the Runyun Canyon Park in North Hollywood.

How successful will this LA motorcade be? The next blog will tell.

2010-04-21 - Anthony Marr's CARE-7 tour blog #8

2010-04-21

Anthony Marr's CARE-7 tour blog #8

A busy few days:

Photobucket

April 17, Saturday, 4 pm, I gave an 80-minute speech at the Animal Liberation Forum, followed by a 20-minute discussion session. Again, I asked the 70-people audience if they had heard of the term "Latent Heat". Again, not a single hand came up.

Photobucket

But they know now, and the talk probably transformed the outlook of the entire audience.

Photobucket

My MS friend Cathy Garneau was there, whom I met for the first time - a very sweet lady

Photobucket

and talented artist.

Photobucket

I saw Paul Fusch come in about 3 quarters into my speech, but then, like a phantom, he disappeared again. After my speech, I met a remarkable women who exuded a sense of strength and solidity. She told me that she belonged to no group, but I read this as her being the personification of the power-of-one. Her name is Michelle Mars. I lightened it by joking, "If you marry me, all you'd have to do is to change one letter in your name. How's that for a 'marriage of convenience', eh? LOL" Subsequently, she told Anthony D that the movement could use more "powerful voices like Anthony Marr's". I'll have to try harder then.

Photobucket

Unfortunately, Marla Stormwolf-Patty, one of the GAHC team members and a leading anti-crush activist along with Nan Sea Love and Cristina Reyes (of GAHC Australia) was held up by traffic and could not attend. Admittedly, I was disappointed and a little upset, but soon, my "zen" took over, and I was happy again. In any case, we - Marla, Paul, Cathy, and of course Anthony D and I - all got together for a party at Coby's place afterward, and a good time was had by all.

Photobucket

We took some "naughty" pics of Anthony D. and Paul F. simultaneously kissing Marla's cheek,

Photobucket

and we all had a good laugh, joking that we should post it on the internet so that our detractors could blast us for having an "orgy". LOL

April 18, Sunday, 2 pm, vegan potluck at Coby's place. Just a small gathering, but a few old friends came by, including Janet Allen, now called Chicana, whom I've known since 2004. She and I will be going to the David Rubin potluck the next day. A notably person who came in late was Monique Lukens, a young woman with amazing intensity who began with contributing ideas as to how our next funeral for the animals events should be conducted, including dumpster diving for animal bones for the ceremony. After a while, I turned to talking about hunting, and she was flabbergasted by what I revealed. She stayed the entire evening and to work on an email to the organizer of a luncheon with Ed Asner on April 21, Wednesday, suggesting to the organizer that since Mr. Asner was an animal advocate, that the venue should be a veg restaurant, instead of the Eclectic Restaurant whose menu was full of meat dishes. I let her use my laptop,

Photobucket

and since I then could not use it, I went to Coby's piano. When I played the theme of Gone With the Wind, Monique loved it, and asked me to play it over again. After midnight, she did a short interview with me on her recorder for her new radio program. It took us about 7 takes to get it done. By then it was 2 a.m., and I walked her out to her car.

April 19, Monday, 6:30 pm, vegan potluck at David Rubin's place. About a dozen people present, including Armaiti May who introed my talk, Janet Allen, Bob Linden, Coby's daughter Noor, Julie Leibovitz, James Claire Lewis, and Plinio J. Garcia of JGreen Natural Foods Inc, who asked me to email him for him to send in a donation, among others.

Photobucket

It was a vegan group, so I started on that track, but did move on to hunting and global warming and again, no one had heard of "Latent Heat". The Q&A was concentrated on saving the planet from Runaway Global Heating. Plinio started by talking about converting the world to veganism "one plate at a time", but after a bit, he began to say that that would be too slow, and that I had given him a sense of urgency not there before. All were in a state of harmony in the discussion, but the gent from India criticized me for calling the hunters "serial killers", saying that I should not attack people but to sweet-talk to them. My retort was that of everybody in the room, he was the only person who attacked me, drawing a roomful of laughter. LOL

Photobucket

April 20, Tuesday: A rest day, but no rest for me. Monique called in the morning giving Coby the good news that she could bring a guest to the Asner luncheon, and asked Coby to go. Coby deferred to me, and wrote back to Monique, who called me later to invite me to be her guest. So, I spent the whole rest of the day writing a letter to Mr. Asner, which was still unfinished by night fall.

April 21, Wednesday: This was a sad day for the AR movement. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the law that bans videos portraying cruelty to animals, which left crush videos and dog-fighting videos in limbo, sending the whole AR movement into an uproar and a tail-spin, centered upon anti-crush. This is a clear case of hunters grouping their hunting videos and the crush videos together so that, in order to protect the legality of the hunting videos, they are defending the crush videos - how contemptibly despicable, or despicably contemptible - your choice!

I spent the morning finishing my letter to Mr. Asner, award-winning actor, animal advocate, age 80. By 11:00, it was done.

(To read this letter, please go to www.HomoSapiensSaveYourEarth.blogspot.com)

I packed up, went to the nearest Office Depot to get it printed out, and arrived at the Eclectic Restaurant on time, with the letter sandwiched between the pages of my second book [Homo Sapiens! SAVE YOUR EARTH!]. When settled, there were about 20 guests seated at a long table, with Mr. Asner at the head.

Photobucket

After the lunch, he came down to our end of the table to chat with us. I found him very personable, humble. genuine and approachable. In a momentary lull, I stood up at the tail end of the table and asked loudly, "Mr. Asner, do you have any influence over the Supreme Court or the Congress?" He laughed, and his answer showed that he was already keenly aware of what happened this morning. I presented my book and letter to him.

Photobucket

Monique loved him, and he seemed very fond of her. They talked for quite a while.

Photobucket

Towards the end of the luncheon, we took our group picture, and then, Mr. Asner called out, "Where is my book? Where is my book?!" meaning [Homo Sapiens! SAVE YOUR EARTH!]!!! Apparently, when he changed seats, he had left it at the previous seat. Someone found it and brought it to him. He hugged it. I am so gratified!

Photobucket

When I was walking Monique back to her car, she said how happy she was that I went with her. "It was meant to be," she said. Quite a remarkable woman.

Later this evening, Marla told us that the Congress is tabling a bill to ban crush videos, while stressing that hunting videos are to be forever unassailable. This is another case of hunter manipulation, except, now, perhaps due to the fury generated in the AR movement, they have separated the hunting videos from the crush videos, to allow banning the latter while iron-casting the former. Elementary, Watson! My new strategy, therefore, is to use the hideous hunting videos as weapons to destroy hunting.

Anthony Marr's letter to Ed Asner - Los Angeles - 2010-04-21

Photobucket

Dear Mr. Asner,

It is an honor to break bread with you, and even more so to share our passion for the rights and welfare of our non-human animal brethren with whom we share this fragile planet.

In case you are not familiar with me and my work, may I first present my mini-bio written for the Animal Rights National Conference at which I have been a key speaker every year since 2004, often giving upwards of 10 speeches each time:

Photobucket

Anthony Marr has a science degree (physics) and is the author of the critically acclaimed "OMNI-SCIENCE and the Human Destiny" (2003) and “Homo Sapiens! SAVE YOUR EARTH” (2008).

A full-time wildlife preservationist and anti-hunting activist since 1995, he has

- cleaned up North American Chinatowns of traditional medicines containing endangered species ingredients such as tiger bone, rhino horn, bear gall and elephant ivory,

- been a leading anti-hunting activist since 1995, whose Bear Referendum campaign, in which he debated 50-120 hunters at a time 50 times in 50 cities, was hailed by the Globe and Mail as the "highest-profile animal advocacy campaign in Canada in 1996",

- fought the horrendous Canadian Seal Massacre since 1997,

- been to Japan twice to work against whaling and dolphin capture and slaughter,

- been to India 3 times and worked in 3 tiger reserves (Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Ranthambhore) to help save the Bengal tiger from extinction, which won him the title of the "Champion of the Bengal Tiger" in the award winning TV documentary series "Champions of the Wild" aired on Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Knowledge Network in 20 countries.

He founded Heal Our Planet Earth (HOPE) in 1999 and is the leader of HOPE’s Global Emergency Operation (GEO) on climate change and mass extinction.

He founded the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition (GAHC) in 2009.

He has conducted 6 Compassion for Animals Road Expeditions (CARE tours) since 2003, each covering 25-44 U.S. states over 3-7 months, and is currently on his 7th Compassion for Animals Road expedition (CARE-7), which will take him and GAHC VP Anthony Damiano begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting through 40 states in 7 months.

Photobucket

Through my last six continental tours, I have worked with numerous local animal advocacy groups on all kinds of animal rights and animal welfare issues. Where anti-hunting is concerned, he has worked with dozens of anti-hunting groups on as many local anti-hunting campaigns. Through this prolonged experience, I have found out one thing that is universal. Whenever a local anti-hunting groups fights a prohunting local government (which are always prohunting), the local anti-hunting groups always lose, which has led to my conceiving and forming the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition, with the local anti-hunting groups as member groups. To forge this coalition is one of the aims of the current CARE-7 tour. With the coalition forged in 2010, then in 2011, whenever a local anti-hunting group tackles a local prohunting government, we will bring the weight of the entire coalition to bear upon the prohunting local government, and win.

Why are the local governments always prohunting? First, not only local governments, but all governments on all levels, are always run by hunters. Why? Let me give a example. While nationally about 5% of the population hunt, in New Jersey, only 0.8% of the population do. In other words, 99.2% of New Jerseyans do not hunt. But only the 0.8% has the power to determine wildlife management policy. The state constitution of New Jersey clearly states that of the 11 voting members of the Fish and Game Commission which sets wildlife management policy, at least 6 must be hunters. As if this is not bad enough, all 11 were hunters last time I checked. Likewise for most other states. In other words, non-government biologists, ecologists, hikers, campers, photographers, much less animal advocates, have no say in the matter. It is wildlife management policies by hunters, for hunters. So much for "Democracy".

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. There is also the state-level Hunter Harassment Statutes. Near Pittsburgh, PA, a woman who had a 20 acre hobby farm complete with NO HUNTING signs was charged with 9 counts of hunter harassment for asking a group of trespassing hunters in the process of hunting deer to get off her property. She was tried and found guilty of all counts. These state-level "Hunter Harassment Statutes" violate the free-speech rights and property rights of non-hunting citizens, and are clearly unconstitutional.

And then there is the Big Lie. The prohunting government of Allentown, PA, for example, announced that the Trexler Nature Preserve, which had maintained a no-hunting policy since it's founding in 1906, had a deer overpopulation problem which damaged the park's ecology. Since the discharge of firearms is prohibited in an urban park, the bow hunters rushed in to "do the community a service". But when I entered the park on the opening day of bow-hunting, I saw hundreds of acres of forest having been plowed down and vast plantations of deer clover planted in its place. Rich deer food has the effect of maximizing the deer's reproductive rate, which did create an overpopulation problem. The whole thing was initiated by the bow hunters for hunting purposes and the prohunting government deluded the public to justify it. Bow-hunters are aggressive and organized, and systematically force their way into urban environments to indulge in their blood "sport".

Bow-hunting is the cruelest form of hunting. Notoriously inaccurate beyond a 20 yard range, resulting in a 50% non-lethal wounding rate. In other words, of 100 deer shot by arrows, 50 do not die, but stagger around with arrows imbeded in non-vital part of their bodies - rump, back, abdomen, neck, head, even eyes - for days and weeks. They try to justify bow-hunting by arguing that they hunt for food, which is a transparent lie. If they hunt for food, they would have used a rifle. Clearly, they hunt for entertainment. It is not called Recreational Hunting for nothing.

Even this is not all, but just a microcosm of the entire nation. 5% of the 300 million Americans are hunters, most of whom are deer hunters, most of whom want more than one deer . So, 30 million extra deer are needed to satisfy their blood lust. First, they eradicate all natural predators, mostly wolves, then plant "food plots" all over the country, on both public and private land, to boost the deer population by 30 million. But so many more deer lead to huge numbers of deer-vehicle accidents (DVAs), resulting in over 1 million deer fatalities and some 250 human deaths every year, year after year. The hunters are aware of this - at least I've told them repeatedly so - but press on with their "program" regardless, thus justifying the labels not only of "serial killers" of wild animals, but "premeditated mass murderers" of the 250 humans every year, and even "terrorists", since the victims never know who they would be, nor where nor when they would be killed.

Hunting is not my only concern, and domestic animal abuse goes without saying. One more thing about the cruel community and industry. The hunters post a lot of hunting videos on the internet, due to which they are also in support of the "Crush Videos", where women in their bare feet or high heels crush cats and dogs to death on video for the enjoyment of perverts, and they are legal! Only yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a long standing law banning such videos, on grounds of freedom of speech!

Now for something infinitely destructive, which could drive millions of species to extinction within decades. We are currently in the 6th mass extinction which threatens to be the most devastating yet, certainly more so than the 5th which wiped out over 30% of all species including the dinosaurs by means of an asteroid strike 64 million years ago. The 3rd, the End-Permian Mass Extinction 251 million years ago, caused indeed by global warming due to massive volcanic activities associated with continental drift and splitting of continental shields, led to the extinction of 75% of all land species and 95% of all marine species, including all the corals. The current 6th mass extinction promises to match or even outdo the 3rd. The cause of the global warming is different, but the result will be the same or worse. We have an estimated 20 million species on Earth today, only 10% of which is known to science. By the end of this century, over 16 million species could have fallen extinct, including some of the most magnificent, such as the tigers, elephants, bears, rhinos, whales, dolphins, eagles and butterflies. What kind of a world are we passing on to our children?

One thing that could make this nightmare come true is Latent Heat, or rather our unawareness of it. When I give a global warming talk, I often start with a question to the audience, "How many of you have heard of the term 'Latent Heat'?" Of an audience of 100, maybe one or two hands would come out, and at that hesitantly, time after time. Let me explain. Take a pot of ice water, place it on a stove set on low heat, and stir it with a thermometer. My next question would be, "When would the temperature of the water begin to rise?" The answer is, "After all the ice has melted off." For as long as there is ice remaining in the pot, the temperature would remain near freezing. But as soon as the last of the ice cubes have melted, the temperature will rise. It is not exactly that the ice "cools" the water, but that the heat infused into the pot will go first into melting the ice - without raising the temperature, and this is latent heat, "latent" meaning "hidden". After the ice has melted off, however, the temperature will rise, and the heat infused as of this point is called "Sensible Heat". The Arctic Ocean can be considered a huge pot of ice water, and the summer sun the stove. For as long as there is still sea ice to melt, the Arctic Ocean water temperature would remain relatively cool, instigating global warming deniers to say, "Global warming? What global warming?", which is what the oil lobby, which has spent $200 million on the Denial Movement, wants us to say. But as soon as the summer sea ice has completely melted off - as early as 2013 - the Arctic Ocean temperature will rise, and rise meteorically, and by then, it could be too late.

But there is still something even worse - Methane, a far more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide - by about 70X. Methane is a major byproduct of animal agriculture, which annually emits 25% more CO2-equivalent in methane than the entire transportation system. Even more so is the Arctic and subArctic permafrost which is loaded with methane by the billions of tons, and which has already begun melting as we speak, releasing their lethal genie irretrievably into the atmosphere. Once the Arctic water and air temperatures begin to skyrocket - as early as 2013 - the permafrost, both on land and under the sea, will begin melting at unprecedented rates, and vast quantities of methane will be released into the atmosphere, enough to generate its own feedback loop, where more methane in the atmosphere will warm up the globe even faster, melting even more permafrost, releasing even more methane. Once this process has begun, the much dreaded Runaway Global Heating can be said to have commenced. Once it has started, it will be almost unstoppable. Another term for Runaway Global Heating is the Methane Time-Bomb, or the M-Bomb - a "slow bomb" which would take decades to spend, but once detonated, it will inexorably run its course until it is spent, by which time millions of species will have fallen extinct. Quite amazing really to see how this coincides with the Mayan calendar prediction of December 21, 2012, being the end of the world.

Something so momentous - Latent Heat and the Methane Time-bomb - should have become a household word but now. But think back to the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change convention, or the 2009 one at Copenhagen - how many times have you heard the term "Latent Heal" or the word "Methane" mentioned? Almost zero times. At most, they talk about CO2, which is only the fuse. The bomb is Methane.

It is predicted that the 21st Century will be a century of global drought. Consider the 20,000 glaciers in the Himalayas which feed the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers due east, and the six rivers in Southeast Asia and India due south, the latter providing for over 1.5 billion people today. What will happen after they have all melted off later this century? Jame Lovelock of Gaia Hypothesis fame predicts that by the end of this century, 5 billion people will have perished due to water shortages, and therefore food shortages, and therefore mass starvation.

Back to the present, as mentioned before, while I conduct a long tour, I offer local activists and groups my aid to their local campaigns. In California, the leading local wildlife campaign is against black bear hunting. Currently, the hunters are driving for three things: 1. Unlimited Black bear hunting. 2. Using dogs for the purpose. And 3. To mount GPS units on the dogs to lead the hunters to the treed bears, if they have not been torn apart by the dogs already. I ask Californians: How many Grizzly bears are there in California? The answer is "One" - the one on the state flag.

Photobucket

Not long ago, there used to be thousands, which have long since been exterminated. Next question: Do you want the Black bears to suffer the same fate?

Obviously, to conduct a 40-states-in-7-months road tour won't come cheap. We have no budget to finance the entire tour. It is a wing and a prayer and one day at a time. If you could help sustain this 7th Compassion for Animals Road Expedition of mine, I would be eternally grateful. I created my organization Heal Our Planet Earth (HOPE) in 1999, and have yet to pay myself a single cent in salary. Rest assured that all donation dollars will go to the animals, the planet, and our children's future.

Thank you for reading my proposal.

Sincerely yours,

Anthony Marr.
